Abstract: A gaming device which enables a player to operate a selected number of reels within a plurality of reels. The number of reels to be operated may be selected by a direct control feature of the gaming device. In one embodiment, the number of reels operated is based on an amount wagered by the player. If the number of reels operated is less than the entire plurality of reels, the gaming device deactivates those reels not operated. The specific number of reels operated is associated with a specific paytable. The gaming device enables the player to select a number of reels to be operated based on the payout preference of the player.
