  • Patent number: 4955553
Abstract: A reel for coiling and uncoiling metal strips includes an expanding mandrel which is actuated by a spreader cylinder. The expanding mandrel is driven by a drive motor with a control and computing unit for determining the outer diameter of the coil at any given time. The outer diameter is introduced into a microprocessor which determines the initial spreading pressure and the winding pull to be maintained. The winding pull to be maintained is introduced into the control and computing unit. The microprocessor further determines, in dependence on the outer diameter of the coil, the required spreading pressure which is generated in the spreading cyclinder. As a result, the expanding mandrel always operates with a spreading force which is dependent upon the outer diameter of the coil at any given time, so that overloading is eliminated and wear is substantially reduced.

  • Patent number: 4886199
Abstract: A strip treatment apparatus, for example for metal strips includes a strip drive and a strip store disposed both at the apparatus entry and apparatus exit with a processing section being disposed between the two stores and a strip drive being disposed after the processing section. The two loop trolleys or roll tables of the strip stores are mechanically interconnected to form a movable unit. The strip drive disposed after the processing section and/or the strip drives at the entry and exit of the apparatus are operative as drives for moving the interconnected loop trolleys or interconnected roll tables, so that independent drives for these movable units can be omitted.

  • Patent number: 4842178
Abstract: A band store includes a plurality of horizontally movable loop carts, of which one loop cart drive is traction controlled and the other loop cart drives are speed controlled, and this control is effected as a function of the speed of the traction controlled loop cart drive. Thereby synchronous running of the loop carts is achieved.

  • Patent number: 4819470
Abstract: A method of continuously straightening metal strip comprises directing the strip over devices which act on the strip to effect its straightening by first causing a stretching and leveling and thereafter stretching and bending. The device for continuously straightening the thin metal strip comprises a plurality of entrance rollers arranged in succession at an entrance portion and a plurality of delivery rollers arranged in succession at a delivery portion with a stretching and bending device arranged between the two portions. The metal strip is guided over the entrance and delivery rollers as the rollers are driven by a drive motor and a common device member driven by the motor. At least two of the entrance rollers and at least two of the delivery rollers are tensioning rollers. A differential is included in the drive of each tensioning roller and it includes an overdriving motor with an adjustable speed.

  • Patent number: 4602408
Abstract: A roll for a hot- or cold-rolling stand has a core having an outer surface centered on an axis and a pair of axially opposite ends and respective conduits extending through the core and opening adjacent the ends thereof. A sleeve having an outer surface, axially opposite ends, and an inner surface centered on the axis coaxially surrounds the core. One of the surfaces has a central portion projecting radially toward and engaging the other surface between the ends in all-around annular contact. Respective elastic and annular seals engage radially between the ends of the rolls, that is each seal engages betwen one end of the sleeve and the corresponding end of the core. These seals define respective annular compartments at the ends, between the roll surfaces, and subdivided axially from each other by the central portion of the one surface. Each conduit opens into a respective one of the compartments.

  • Patent number: 4558578
Abstract: Hot-rolled metal strip is pickled and then, before oiling and coiling, is subjected to a rolling operation of the skin-pass and/or bend-leveling type. If the strip is to be longitudinally split in half, the rollers of the skin-pass assembly--which preferably consists of two stages--may include a substantially barrel-shaped roller pair designed to impart a symmetrical cross-section to each of the two strip halves.

  • Patent number: 4539830
Abstract: A thin metal strip is made by hot-rolling a strip workpiece, stretch-bend leveling the hot-rolled strip workpiece immediately after hot-rolling it, tensioning the strip workpiece with a predetermined tension while stretch-bend leveling it, and thereafter coiling up the workpiece. In addition the workpiece is rapidly cooled immediately after stretch-bend leveling it and before coiling it up. Thus the workpiece is stretch-bend leveled before it cools so it can be treated while still about 1100.degree. C., at which temperature it is still very plastic. The workpiece can therefore be deformed greatly while under modest tension, so as to produce a very thin product that is very uniform. The tension in the strip merely serves to keep the workpiece looped over as much an arc as possible around the stretch-bending rolls.

  • Patent number: 4534198
Abstract: An apparatus used in combination with a hot-rolling line having a succession of roll stands through which passes a strip workpiece in a horizontal transport direction has at least one vessel downstream of the roll stands in the direction and aligned in the direction therewith. This vessel is formed with an upstream inlet and a downstream outlet. A bath of a liquid coolant fills the vessel to a level above the inlet and outlet openings. Guides draw the workpiece from the roll stands into the inlet, through the vessel, and out of the outlet thereof. Thus the workpiece is wholly immersed in and cooled by the liquid coolant within the vessel. A pump feeds fresh coolant into the vessel and withdraws hot coolant therefrom. A plurality of such vessels, each with a respective bath and pump means, is provided with all of the inlets and outlets aligned. The inlet and outlet are formed as horizontally extending slots closely conforming the cross-sectional shape of the workpiece.

  • Patent number: 4464805
Abstract: A metal-strip pickling apparatus has feed means including upstream and downstream bridle-roller pairs for longitudinally displacing the strip under longitudinal tension along a straight transport path from the upstream bridle-roller pair to the downstream bridle-roller pair. A housing longitudinally traversed by the strip is subdivided longitudinally by a succession of transverse partitions into a longitudinal succession of compartments each having a respective treatment bath, normally of acid. Each partition has a rigid lower partition half having an upper edge and an upper partition half having a lower edge portion elastically engaging the upper face of the strip moving along the path. The upper edges all are longitudinally aligned and touch the lower face of the strip moving along the path. The acid baths have liquid levels above the upper edges of the respective lower partition halves. The lower portions of the upper partition halves seal tightly with the strip and respective lower partition halves.

  • Patent number: 4360137
Abstract: A looper has a fixed support carrying a plurality of guides and a movable support carrying a plurality of guides, with a strip being looped back and forth between the guides of the two supports. The movable support is connected via a cable or chain to a winch carried on a rotary output member of a planetary-gear transmission having two inputs. One of these inputs is rotated continuously at a predetermined speed while the other input is rotated at a variable speed determined by the rotation rate of the output member.
