  • Patent number: 7135033
Abstract: Methods and systems are disclosed for phototreatment in which replaceable containers comprising one or more adjuvant (consumable or re-useable) substances are employed. The adjuvant substance can be, for example, a topical substance or a coolant. Systems are disclosed for using a topical substance to detect contact of a phototreatment device with a tissue, detect speed of a phototreatment device over the tissue, detect regions of tissue that have been treated by a phototreatment device and/or to provide other benefits to the tissue such as improved skin tone and texture, tanning, etc. Safety systems are also disclosed that ensure that a proper consumable substance and/or container is connected to a phototreatment device and/or directed to a proper target. Additionally, cooling systems and methods that utilize phase change materials for extracting heat from a light generating device are disclosed.

  • Patent number: 6997923
Abstract: A method and apparatus are provided for performing a therapeutic treatment on a patient's skin by concentrating applied radiation of at least one selected wavelength at a plurality of selected, three-dimensionally located, treatment portions, which treatment portions are within non-treatment portions. The ratio of treatment portions to the total volume may vary from 0.1% to 90%, but is preferably less than 50%. Various techniques, including wavelength, may be utilized to control the depth to which radiation is concentrated and suitable optical systems may be provided to concentrate applied radiation in parallel or in series for selected combinations of one or more treatment portions.

  • Publication number: 20040230258
Abstract: Methods and apparatus for hair treatment are disclosed which comprise applying electromagnetic radiation (EMR) to a skin treatment area to deposit energy in one or more hairs so as to modify a shape and/or chemical structure of at least a portion of the hairs. The applied radiation can cause heating of the hair tips, so as to modify their shape, e.g., reduce sharpness of the hair tips. Modification of the hair can involve heat-induced changes to the shape, composition, or function of the hair tip, hair shaft, and/or hair matrix that make the hair less capable of re-entering the skin. The methods and apparatus can treat and/or prevent pseudofolliculitis barbae (PFB) in the treatment area. A method is also disclosed for managing hair growth using wavelengths between 1200 nm and 1400 nm.

  • Publication number: 20040093042
Abstract: The present invention provides method and apparatus for treating tissue in a region at depth by applying optical radiation thereto of a wavelength able to reach the depth of the region and of a selected relatively low power for a duration sufficient for the radiation to effect the desired treatment while concurrently cooling tissue above the selected region to protect such tissue. Treatment may be enhanced by applying mechanical, acoustic or electrical stimulation to the region.

  • Patent number: 6015404
Abstract: Method and apparatus are provided for use with systems applying laser energy to treat a selected dermatology problem. The method and apparatus protect skin not under treatment in skin regions affected by the laser by detecting, with a suitable sensor, at least a selected parameter in the skin region affected by the delivered laser energy and performing a control function to effect the desired protection by use of a feedback mechanism which is operative in response to an output from the sensor. For some embodiments, two laser pulses may be utilized, which pulses are spaced by a time which is preferably greater than the thermal relaxation time for affected regions not under treatment, for example an epidermis through which the energy is passed to an area under treatment, but is less than the thermal relaxation time of the area under treatment.
