Patent number: 8213449Abstract: Methods and systems are provided for aging EV-DO pages in a queue based on latency-sensitivity. An access node receives data for access terminals, and responsively generates pages and adds them to the back of a queue. The access node associates a respective aging value with any latency-tolerant pages. The access node transmits the pages in the queue, which involves: (a) assessing the pages on a first-in, first-out basis; (b) transmitting latency-sensitive pages when those pages reach the front of the queue; (c) sending latency-tolerant pages to the back of the queue (and incrementing their aging values) when those pages reach the front of the queue with an aging value that is less than a maximum-delay parameter; and (d) transmitting latency-tolerant pages when those pages reach the front of the queue with an aging value that is greater than or equal to the maximum-delay parameter.Type: GrantFiled: August 29, 2008Date of Patent: July 3, 2012Assignee: Sprint Spectrum L.P.Inventors: Andrew M. Patent number: 8195159Abstract: Methods and systems are provided for session restoration upon return to EV-DO. In one embodiment, a first radio network controller (RNC) receives from an access terminal a session-establishment request, where the session-establishment request requests establishment of a session for the access terminal. The first RNC determines that the session-establishment request indicates that the access terminal does not currently have a session, and responsively queries a second RNC to determine whether the access terminal currently has a session with the second RNC, which the access terminal does. After querying the second RNC, the first RNC receives session data from the second RNC, where the session data corresponds to the session that the access terminal currently has with the second RNC. The first RNC uses the received session data to set up a session with the first RNC for the access terminal.Type: GrantFiled: September 25, 2008Date of Patent: June 5, 2012Inventors: Rajveen Narendran, Andrew M. Patent number: 8145254Abstract: Methods and systems are provided for dynamic adjustment of the pilot-channel, paging-channel, and sync-channel transmission-power levels based on forward-link and reverse-link RF conditions. In an exemplary embodiment, a base station provides service on a carrier in a wireless coverage area, and computes both an Ec/Ior value and a reverse noise rise (RNR) value for the carrier. Based at least in part on the Ec/Ior value and at least in part on the RNR value, the base station adjusts at least one of a pilot-channel power level, a paging-channel power level, and a sync-channel power level for the carrier. As an example, if (a) Ec/Ior is above a first threshold and (b) RNR is below a second threshold, the base station may increase all three of the power levels, so as to improve service quality and coverage, among other advantages.Type: GrantFiled: July 14, 2010Date of Patent: March 27, 2012Assignee: Sprint Spectrum L.P.Inventors: Ryan S. Patent number: 8139525Abstract: Methods and systems are provided for carrier selection based on type of packet flow. Service is provided to access terminals on a plurality of carriers in a wireless coverage area. A request is received from a first access terminal. The request indicates that the first access terminal is requesting a packet flow, and the request comprises a packet-flow-type indication. It is determined whether the packet-flow-type indication is associated with an expedited-forwarding quality of service (QoS). If the packet-flow-type indication is associated with an expedited-forwarding QoS, it is further determined that, among the plurality of carriers, a first carrier has the fewest ongoing packet flows having the packet-flow-type indication; responsively, the first access terminal is instructed to conduct the requested packet flow on the first carrier.Type: GrantFiled: September 27, 2006Date of Patent: March 20, 2012Assignee: Sprint Spectrum L.P.Inventors: Bret D. Vondemkamp, Andrew M. Wurtenberger, Rajveen Narendran, Joseph I. Schield

Patent number: 8125967Abstract: Methods and systems are provided for prioritized EV-DO paging based on type of packet flow. In an embodiment, an access node provides service to a plurality of access terminals in a wireless coverage area. The access node receives data addressed to a particular access terminal, where the data is associated with a packet flow such as a VoIP call. The access node determines that the access terminal does not have a traffic channel, and responsively generates a page for transmission to the access terminal, where the page is associated with the packet flow. The access node determines whether the packet flow is latency-sensitive or rather is latency-tolerant. If the packet flow is latency-sensitive, the access node responsively prioritizes the page over one or more pages respectively associated with one or more latency-tolerant packet flows, where the prioritizing is with respect to order of transmission in the wireless coverage area.Type: GrantFiled: November 10, 2006Date of Patent: February 28, 2012Assignee: Sprint Spectrum L.P.Inventors: Ryan S. Talley, Andrew M. Wurtenberger

Patent number: 8059615Abstract: Methods are provided for implementing selective personality negotiation during session negotiation. In one embodiment, an access node maintains an access-node-supported set of one or more personalities supported by the access node, wherein the access-node-supported set comprises a personality 0. The access node receives from an access terminal an access-terminal-supported set of one or more personalities supported by the access terminal, wherein the access-terminal-supported set also comprises the personality 0. Responsive to receiving the access-terminal-supported set, the access node negotiates a session-specific set of one or more personalities with the access terminal for use by the access terminal during a session, the session-specific set consisting of personality 0 and a first personality, wherein the first personality is a highest-numbered personality in the intersection of the access-node-supported set and the access-terminal-supported set.Type: GrantFiled: September 8, 2008Date of Patent: November 15, 2011Assignee: Sprint Spectrum L.P.Inventors: Rajveen Narendran, Andrew M.
