  • Patent number: 5866178
Abstract: Tire recapping or retreading apparatus and method including the use of a tread mold with a plurality of mold segments. A tread mold loading machine is used to position a prepared tire carcass or built tire relative to the mold segments and to install the mold segments on the exterior of the built tire. The mold segments are retained in place on the exterior of the tire carcass by a pair of tension springs. The tension springs hold the mold segments on the tire carcass after the mold segments have been released from the tread mold loading machine. The use of the tread mold loading machine and the mold segments eliminates distortion of the tire carcass during installation of the tread mold on the exterior of the built tire.

  • Patent number: 4957574
Abstract: A method and apparatus for centering an annular tread on a pneumatic tire-casing is described. The method, preferably put into use with the apparatus, comprises mounting a casing on a wheel, locating the equatorial plane of the casing or wheel, mounting the annular tread on an axially-moveable tread expander assembly, and positioning the tread on the tread expander assembly such that its circumferential center line is located a fixed distance from and parallel to the equatorial plane of the casing or wheel. The distance between the annular tread and the casing or wheel is reduced by an amount equal to the fixed distance so that the annular tread encircles the casing and the circumferential centerline of the tread becomes coincident with the equatorial plane of the casing or wheel.

  • Patent number: 4311182
Abstract: An apparatus and method for grooving tires which is particularly useful for renewing previously used over-the-road tires and which removes a portion of a layer of rubber applied to a tread face of a carcass so as to form on the tread face a predetermined grooved tread design. Relative motion between a heated knife and a tire carcass is controlled and coordinated in such a manner as to form a particular selected tread pattern, while one of a plurality of knives of varying configurations is selected to form particular portions of the grooved design. As described more fully hereinafter, a programmable memory preferably in the form of a digital, electronic central processor unit controls the operation of components of the apparatus and is programmed to follow particular functional sequences.

  • Patent number: 4237955
Abstract: An apparatus and method for grooving tires which is particularly useful for renewing previously used off-the-road tires and which removes a portion of a layer of rubber applied to a tread face of a carcass so as to form on the tread face a pattern of lugs. Relative motion between a heated knife and a tire carcass is controlled and coordinated in such a manner as to form a particular selected tread pattern, while controlling the number and spacing of the lugs and the curvature, angularity, and depth of the incisions which form the lugs. As described more fully hereinafter, a digital, electronic central processor unit controls the operation of components of the apparatus and may be programed to follow particular functional sequences.
