  • Publication number: 20060197839
Abstract: A system for automatically acquiring high-resolution images by steering a pan-tilt-zoom camera at targets detected in a fixed camera view is provided. The system uses automatic or manual calibration between multiple cameras. Using automatic calibration, the homography between the cameras in a home position is estimated together with the effects of pan and tilt controls and the expected height of a person in the image. These calibrations are chained together to steer a slave camera. The manual calibration scheme steers a camera to the desired region of interest and calculates the pan, tile and zoom parameters accordingly.

  • Publication number: 20060159308
Abstract: A novel system and method of treating the output of moving cameras, in particular ones that enable the application of conventional “static camera” algorithms, e.g., to enable the continuous vigilance of computer surveillance technology to be applied to moving cameras that cover a wide area. According to the invention, a single camera is deployed to cover an area that might require many static cameras and a corresponding number of processing units. A novel system for processing the main video sufficiently enables long-term change detection, particularly the observation that a static object has been moved or has appeared, for instance detecting the parking and departure of vehicles in a parking lot, the arrival of trains in stations, delivery of goods, arrival and dispersal of people, or any other application.

  • Publication number: 20060083423
Abstract: Methods and apparatus are provided for normalizing objects across a plurality of image viewpoints. A set of classification results are obtained for a given object class across a sequence of images for each of a plurality of viewpoints. The classification results are each comprised of a position of one of the objects in the image, and at least one projected property of the object at that position. Normalization parameters are then determined for each of the viewpoints by fitting a high order model to the classification results to model a change in the projected property. The high order model may implement a least squares fit of a second order polynomial to the classification results. The normalization parameters may be used to compute normalized features and normalized training data for object classification.

  • Publication number: 20060061653
Abstract: Techniques are presented for controlling views of plurality of imaging units, where each imaging unit outputs a feed comprising video. A set of parameters are determined, and the set of parameters defines a given selected view of a region able to be visually covered by the plurality of imaging units. The given selected view is one of a plurality of predetermined selected views of the region. Each of the plurality of selected views corresponds to a portion of the region and to one or more of the imaging units able to visually cover the portion of the region. Further, each selected view is defined by a corresponding set of parameters. It is determined which of the one or more feeds correspond to the given selected view, and the one or more feeds that correspond to the given selected view are output.

  • Publication number: 20050229007
Abstract: A method and system is provided to provide enrollment of biometric data from individuals without the need for the enrollees to travel to a central location. The system and method provides for optionally detecting multiple types of biometric data, for example, fingerprints, facial scan, visual scan, iris scan, voice scan, or the like, to be captured at the point of enrollee use. During the biometric capture process, the biometric enrollment device monitors and establishes the identity of the enrollee and measures the quality of the biometric input as it occurs. If unacceptable quality is detected, then repeated biometric scans may be necessary, but is done at time of enrollment avoiding any need to send inaccurate information back to a service institution. When the enrollment process completes, the biometric data is encrypted, time stamped and either mailed back to the service institution or is transmitted back.

  • Publication number: 20050185823
Abstract: A system and method for generating a viewable video index for low bandwidth applications are provided. The exemplary aspects of the present invention solve the problems with the prior art systems by incorporating information for generating a viewable representation of the video data into the index, thus generating a viewable video index. The viewable video index contains information for generating a visual representation of moving objects in the video data, a visual representation of the background of the video capture area, i.e. the scene, a representation of the object trajectory, a representation of the object attributes, and a representation of detected events. The result is that the viewable video index may be transmitted to a low bandwidth application on a client device and may be used along with associated object and background models to generate a representation of the actual video data without requiring that the original video data itself be streamed to the client device.

  • Publication number: 20050012817
Abstract: A system and method for selectively monitoring movement of one or more objects having one or more object attributes in a three dimensional space. The method is achieved by following the steps of detecting a position of the one or more objects in the three dimensional space by collecting information from one or more static sensors; selecting each detected object for monitoring; uniquely identifying selected objects and assigning one or more variable sensors to monitor the uniquely identified object. The method further requires gathering information from the variable sensors for each identified object; detecting a direction of each identified object in the three dimensional space; and controlling the one or more variable sensors to continuously point to the assigned uniquely identified object.

  • Patent number: 6384852
Abstract: An intelligent screen saver utility that is less obtrusive than conventional screen savers is based on the absence of an operator rather than a predetermined time period for activation and detects the presence of the operator for deactivation. The screen saver is totally transparent in use to the operator and requires no touching of the keyboard or mouse movement to either prevent activation or deactivation of the screen saver. The screen saver requires a camera that can grab images. The images are grabbed and temporarily stored in the computer memory. When the difference between successively grabbed images is big enough, a person's presence is detected. When there is no big difference between successive images during a given time period, a person's absence is detected. The presence status is used to control the status of the screen saver.
