Patent number: 11956875Abstract: A power management and smart lighting system is provided that enables efficient distribution of DC power to various building features, including LED lighting. The power management system includes an intelligent power supply unit configured to convert AC power drawn from a building load center into a deadband DC waveform. The deadband DC power generated by the intelligent power supply unit is then transmitted over power-with-Ethernet cables to a plurality of distributed intelligent drivers, each configured to intelligently power one or more LED troffers. The intelligent drivers may be daisy-chained to one another by the power-with-Ethernet cables, enabling a power-ring architecture. To enable easy control of the drivers, intelligent sensors can be distributed throughout the topology and connected to the drivers (e.g., via power-with-Ethernet cables) to enable a wide array of lighting control options.Type: GrantFiled: August 3, 2022Date of Patent: April 9, 2024Assignee: Southwire Company, LLCInventors: Charles Hume, David Sykes, Aldo P. Patent number: 9887657Abstract: A controller for a switched reluctance machine is operated to close a switch which would otherwise be open so as to connect a phase winding to the DC link to which the winding is connected during other parts of the electrical cycle. This produces a condition which allows the insulation of the system to be monitored by applying a voltage between the DC link and ground.Type: GrantFiled: October 12, 2016Date of Patent: February 6, 2018Assignee: NIDEC SR DRIVES, LTDInventors: Michael Paul Tankard, Paul Andrew Sykes, Ian Jordison

Patent number: 9246363Abstract: A rotating electrical machine has a rotor composed of laminations having salient poles. The poles have one or more holes which are positioned so as to reduce the peak stress experienced by the laminations when the rotor is rotating. The holes are chosen according to a disclosed design procedure which gives a reduction in peak stress for a given limit on the output of the machine.Type: GrantFiled: May 11, 2011Date of Patent: January 26, 2016Assignee: NIDEC SR DRIVES, LTDInventors: Phillip George Dickinson, Paul Andrew Sykes, Norman Neilson Fulton, Thilak Raj Durairaj

Patent number: 8574312Abstract: A self-aligning prosthetic foot and ankle assembly has an ankle unit pivotally mounting a foot component. The ankle unit contains a hydraulic piston and cylinder assembly having a piston which is linearly movable within a cylinder. The axis of the cylinder is coincident with a shin axis defined by a shin connection interface on the ankle unit. Bypass passages containing damping resistance control valves provide continuous hydraulic damping of dorsi and plantar ankle flexion, the unit being such that, over the major part of the range of damped movement, there is no resilient biasing in either the dorsi or the plantar direction. This confers a number of advantages, including stabilisation of standing, balance control, and improved stair-walking and ramp-walking.Type: GrantFiled: December 14, 2007Date of Patent: November 5, 2013Assignee: Blatchford Products LimitedInventors: David Moser, Fadi Abimosleh, Mir Saeed Zahedi, Graham Harris, Stephen Terry Lang, Andrew Sykes

Patent number: 8169109Abstract: A switched reluctance machine has an array of poles attached to a stationary holding member to form a stator. The stator has no back-iron. The machine has two arrays of rotor poles, positioned on either side of the stator poles, and circumferentially aligned with each other. When a pair of rotor poles is aligned with a stator pole, a small airgap is formed at each end of the stator pole, across which flux can be driven to produce torque in a rotary arrangement or force in a linear arrangement. When the poles are in the unaligned position, the phase inductance is very low.Type: GrantFiled: March 11, 2010Date of Patent: May 1, 2012Assignee: Nidec SR Drives Ltd.Inventors: Paul Andrew Sykes, Phillip George Dickinson

Patent number: 7208906Abstract: A switched reluctance drive is supplied from a power source. The phases of the machine are controlled by a current controller which uses an excitation strategy to minimize the supply current drawn for a particular output. The strategy alternates the excitation between two phases for a given time until the rotor moves to a desired position. A method of starting a switched reluctance motor having a stator with at least two phases, a moveable part, and a position transducer includes determining from transducer output a plurality of phases that are available to produce force in a desired direction, energizing a first phase of the available phases for a predetermined time period that is independent of the transducer output, and energizing a second phase of the available phases after energization of the first phase is initiated.Type: GrantFiled: April 30, 2004Date of Patent: April 24, 2007Assignee: Switched Reluctance Drives LimitedInventors: Michael James Turner, Paul Andrew Sykes
