  • Patent number: 10107564
Abstract: Methods of encapsulating a phase change material in a capsule including suspending a particle of the phase change material in an air stream, coating an entire surface of the suspended particle with at least one layer of a sacrificial compound, coating an entire surface of the layer of the sacrificial compound with at least one layer of a second material, and encapsulating the phase change material within a shell formed by the second material. The step of encapsulating comprising heating the particle coated with the sacrificial compound and the second material, thermally decomposing the sacrificial compound, and vaporizing the sacrificial, wherein the sacrificial compound has a decomposition temperature less than a phase change temperature of the phase change material and a phase change temperature of the second material.

  • Patent number: 9650556
Abstract: The present disclosure relates to a method of encapsulating microcapsules containing relatively high temperature phase change materials and the microcapsules so produced. The microcapsules are coated with an inorganic binder, film former and an inorganic filler. The microcapsules may include a sacrificial layer that is disposed between the particle and the coating. The microcapsules may also include an inner coating layer, sacrificial layer and outer coating layer. The microcapsules are particularly useful for thermal energy storage in connection with, e.g., heat collected from concentrating solar collectors.

Date of Patent: May 16, 2017
    Assignee: SOUTHWEST RESEARCH INSTITUTE
Inventors: James D. Oxley, Anoop Kumar Mathur
  • Publication number: 20160356554
Abstract: Systems for storing and retrieving thermal energy in encapsulated phase change material are disclosed. Thermal energy is substantially stored and/or retrieved in the form of latent heat. The capsules comprise an outer shell which is impervious to both the heat transfer fluid within which they are submerged and the phase change material encapsulated therewithin. Methods for encapsulating the phase change material are also disclosed.

  • Patent number: 6947917
Abstract: An novel recipe that embodies a higher level description than currently used in the industry is described. The novel recipe is referred to herein as an “advanced recipe.” A traditional recipe consists of a general set of instructions called a ‘recipe’ which is used to make a product. An advanced recipe integrates the intent behind these set of instructions. A novel knowledge management system for capturing, integrating, and using broad knowledge is also described below. Some embodiments of the knowledge management system enable modification of recipes for maximizing the overall processing objectives. An example embodiment of the knowledge management system comprises a Knowledge Builder, a Structured Knowledge Repository, and a Decision Maker.
