  • Patent number: 9245043
Abstract: Embedded Media Markers (EMM) are optical-filter-like overlaid marks that can be printed on a part of a paper document that signify the existence of media associated with that part of the document. Users take a picture of an EMM-signified document patch using a cell phone camera, and the media associated with the EMM-signified document location is retrieved and displayed on the phone. Unlike bar codes, EMMs are nearly transparent and thus do not interfere with the document contents. Retrieval of media associated with an EMM is based on image local features of the captured EMM-signified document patch. A semi-automatically technique places an EMM at a location in a document, in such a way that the EMM encompasses sufficient identification features with minimal disturbance to the original document.

  • Patent number: 8965977
Abstract: A computer system is coupled to a plurality of subscribers via a network. The computer system obtains first presence information that corresponds to a first calendar of a user and obtains second presence information that corresponds to a second calendar of the user that is different from the first calendar. The computer system determines one or more presence states of the user including determining, based on presence information for the user that includes the first presence information and the second presence information, a first presence state of the user. The computer system provides the respective presence state of the user, selected from the one or more presence states of the user, to the subscribers via the network.

  • Patent number: 8838684
Abstract: A system and method for determining a presence state of a person. A plurality of data feeds is received. A subset of the plurality of data feeds that includes data regarding presence states of a first person is identified. The subset of the plurality of data feeds are analyzed to determine a plurality of presence states of the first person, wherein a respective presence state of the first person is determined from a respective data feed in the subset of the plurality of data feeds. One or more presence states of the plurality of presence states are reported to subscribers via the network.

  • Publication number: 20140222782
Abstract: A query results preview generation method and system that receives a preliminary query while a query for a search is being constructed, determines a distribution of result items that would be retrieved if the search were executed using the preliminary query, among a new result category including new result items and a previous result category including result items previously retrieved in a session, generates the query results preview using the distribution of result items that would be retrieved if the search were executed using the preliminary query, and provides the query results preview while the query for the search is being constructed and prior to execution of the search using the query.

  • Patent number: 8424751
Abstract: Embedded Media Barcode Links (EMBL), are optimally blended iconic barcode marks printed on paper documents that signify the existence of media associated with that part of the document. EMBLs are used for media retrieval with a camera phone. Users take a picture of an EMBL-signified document patch using a cell phone, and the media associated with the EMBL-signified document location is displayed on the phone. Unlike traditional bar code which requires an exclusive space, EMBLs are optimally blended with contents and thus have less interference with the original document layout and can be moved closer to a media associated location. Unlike Embedded Media Makers (EMM) which requires underlying document features for the marker identification, EMBL has no requirement to underlying features. Moreover, EMBL can take the advantage of users' knowledge to traditional barcode. Retrieval of media associated with an EMBL is based on the barcode identification of the captured EMBL.

  • Patent number: 7844174
Abstract: A method and system for additively, manually sequentially or manually in parallel, selecting multiple points or regions of interest in the analog or digital viewfinder of a photo or video camera with automatic controls like auto-focusing, auto-metering and auto white-balancing. Points or regions capable of being selected, within a grid of elements comprising a camera's evaluative matrix and represented to the user in a viewfinder or other display, may be hard-coded (pre-defined, selectable regions) or any point, pixel, or group of pixels. Data from the selected regions is used to simultaneously, dynamically adjust focus related parameters, light metering and white balancing of the camera and is tied into these features. Point selection may be via touch screen or by holding down a lock button. The selected points or regions may be applied to focus and aperture related adjustments or for any other camera function related to measurement of the scene.

  • Publication number: 20100145808
Abstract: A method and system for delivery of targeted advertisement via multifunction document imaging devices. Imaging devices used for copying, scanning, faxing and printing documents are used to deliver advertisements, coupons, and other promotional material to users. The imaging device is capable of delivering targeted promotional material based on analysis of the documents content passing through the device. Targeting is based on device history, user history or user demographics. Device history and user history are compiled from the contents of the documents processed respectively at a device and by a user. Demographics are inferred from a demographics model using user identity or document content input to the model. Advertisements may be delivered via paper, the device display, and other means.

  • Patent number: 7644073
Abstract: The system enables novice teachers to leverage the expertise of other more experienced teachers who are distributed across geographical areas covered by similar teaching standards (usually states). By leveraging the vast body of knowledge contained within their peer group, the system is designed to help teachers produce better lesson plans. This is accomplished by providing teachers with suggestions based other teachers' plans for similar lessons.

  • Publication number: 20090295682
Abstract: One challenge with using sensing devices to collect information about a person is that the person needs to stay within reach of sensor. Several solutions exist to resolve this issue, some relay on improving the machinery of the sensor, while other relay on constraining the movements of the person tracked. Both these methods have limitations. In this invention proposal, we describe a method for improving data collection without restraining the user unnecessary or that require a leap in sensor technology. By providing subtle feedback of the sensor's field of sensitivity in the form of a reflecting UI, the user can adjust his or her position in front of the sensor to improve the data collection.
