  • Publication number: 20120141851
Abstract: An enclosure for an energy storage device is presently disclosed. The enclosure includes a cell housing having a base portion and at least one side portion seamlessly extending from the base portion to define a volume and having a peripheral edge defining an aperture distal from the base portion through which an electrochemical cell may be disposed within the volume, and a cover securable to the peripheral edge of the housing, where the housing and cover are configured to house at least one electrochemical cell at an operating temperature greater than about 100 degrees Celsius. The enclosure may also include an environmental housing configured to nestingly receive the cell housing, and an insulating element disposed between the environmental housing and the cell housing. Also disclosed is a method of packaging the energy storage device utilizing the enclosure.

  • Publication number: 20120043962
Abstract: A method for determining a case depth of a hardened layer in a surface of a metal object includes: (a) placing an eddy current probe at a location adjacent the surface; (b) using the eddy current probe, generating a time-varying eddy current in the object; (c) using the eddy current probe, outputting a measured eddy current and providing a signal representative of the measured eddy current to a computer; (d) using the computer, comparing the time-varying measured eddy current to a correlation of measured eddy currents to known case depths; and (e) determining the case depth at the location of the probe based on the correlation.

  • Patent number: 7594682
Abstract: A system and method for controlling an application of a friction modifying agent to an area of contact between a railway wheel and a railway rail over which the wheel is traversing to selectively modify the coefficient of friction at the contact area. A sensor is used for detecting a parameter relating to the operation of the railway train. A controller is responsive to the sensor for selecting one or more of a plurality of friction modifying agents and controls the application of the agent to the rail as a function of the parameter. An applicator is responsive to the controller and applies the friction modifying agent to the area of contact between the railway wheel and rail. A second application of the agent may be predicated upon the effectiveness of a first application of the agent. The selection of the appropriate agent may include a consideration of a current location of the railway vehicle.

  • Patent number: 6893058
Abstract: A system and method for friction management for managing and controlling an application of a friction modifying agent to an area of contact between a railway wheel and a railway rail over which the wheel is traversing to selectively modify the coefficient of friction at the contact area. The system comprises a sensor for detecting a parameter relating to the operation of the railway train. A controller is responsive to the sensor and controls the application of a friction modifying agent to the rail as a function of the parameter. An applicator is responsive to the controller and applies the friction modifying agent to the area of contact between the railway wheel and rail. The invention also includes a method for railway train friction management for managing and controlling the application of friction modifying agent to an area of contact between railway wheel and railway rail over which the wheel is traversing to selectively modify the coefficient of friction at the contact area.
