  • Patent number: 4847314
Abstract: A process of producing a room temperature-stable solvent solution from a high molecular weight crystalline ethylene glycol terephthalate solid polyester is disclosed in which the polyester is incorporated into a hot melt of an hydroxy-functional linear polyester having an hydroxy number of at least about 20, an acid number of less than about 30 and a molecular weight in the range of 1,000 to 10,000. This forms a molten mixture containing from about 20% to about 55% of terephthalate polyester which is maintained as a hot melt until a sample of the melt forms a clear to slightly cloudy solution in a 50% mixture thereof with 2-ethoxy diethanol glycol acetate. The reacted hot melt is then mixed with an organic solvent to form a solution which is useful in thermosetting solvent solution coating compositions.

  • Patent number: 4713481
Abstract: Monoethylenically unsaturated polymerizable monomers carrying a plurality of ketimine-blocked primary amine groups are disclosed. These are preferably provided by reacting an organic diisocyanate with the single secondary amine group of a ketimine-blocked diprimary amine carrying a single secondary amino hydrogen atom and then reacting a monohydric acrylate with the other isocyanate group. These monomers are polymerizable to provide copolymers with other monoethylenically unsaturated monomers, and especially acrylate-functional monomers, in which the amine groups remain blocked. These amine groups become unblocked when the copolymers are dispersed in water to form various types of aqueous coating compositions.

  • Patent number: 4454265
Abstract: Aqueous thermosetting coating compositions adapted for roll coat application are disclosed in which water has dispersed therein an adduct of a diglycidyl ether of a bisphenol having a 1,2-epoxy equivalency of at least 1.2 and an average molecular weight of from about 2000 to about 5000 with a stoichiometric proportion, based on epoxy and secondary amine, of diprimary amine having a single secondary amine group and each primary amine group blocked by a ketimine group. At least about 50% of the amine groups of this adduct are protonated with a volatile acid, and the ketimine groups hydrolyze in the water to provide primary amine functionality and ketone solvent in the aqueous medium. From 20% to 50%, based on total resin solids, of water insoluble, heat-hardening phenol-formaldehyde resin curing agent is employed for cure. The curing agents are added to the adduct in solution in water-miscible organic solvent, and cresol-formaldehyde curing agents are preferred.

  • Patent number: 4427804
Abstract: A monosecondary amine containing blocked primary amine groups is provided by reacting a monosecondary amine containing at least one primary amine group (such as diethylene triamine) with a ketone which is hindered to prevent reaction with secondary amino hydrogen atom (such as methyl isobutyl ketone) while removing water. This product disperses in water with the aid of a solubilizing acid to provide a solution which will emulsify a liquid polymer dispersed therein. The water hydrolyzes the blocked primary amine groups to restore reactivity. This product can also be reacted with 1,2-oxirane or isocyanate-functional polymers to provide products which are dispersible in water with a solubilizing acid. These dispersions will electrodeposit at the cathode.

  • Patent number: 4371669
Abstract: Monoethylenically unsaturated beta-carbonyl-containing carboxyl functional monomers and addition polymers containing them and other monoethylenically unsaturated monomers are disclosed, as are methods of coating substrates with the polymers to provide films of improved water resistance. The monomers are especially stable in the form of a salt with a volatile base, and the removal of the base when a polymer containing the monomer is cured causes decarboxylation, and the removal of the carboxyl groups improves the water resistance.
