  • Publication number: 20090279024
Abstract: A cholesteric liquid crystal display device (24) has a protective sheet (40) or a stack of protective sheets adhered to the substrate (11) at the front of a stack of cells (10B, 10G, 10R) containing cholesteric liquid crystal material (19). The protective sheet is adhered by a layer of adhesive (40) which is either an adhesive curable by heat or an adhesive curable by light. The adhesive contains a UV blocking agent, for example, a compound based on benzophenone, having a property of reducing the transmission of ultra-violet light through the adhesive. The protective sheet (s) provides protection to the display device and may be made of glass or plastic. Adhering the protective sheet (s) with an adhesive provides the advantages of being much cheaper to implement than laminated glass and of allowing the adhesive to contain the UV blocking agent for UV protection of the cholesteric liquid crystal material.

  • Publication number: 20090103027
Abstract: A cholesteric liquid crystal display device (40) comprises a stack of three cells (10), each cell comprising a layer of cholesteric liquid crystal material (19) capable of being switched between a plurality of states including a planar state in which it reflects light with wavelengths in a central band (31) corresponding to red, green and blue, respectively, and in overtone bands (32, 33) on both sides of the central band (31). Each adjacent pair of cells 10 in the stack is held together by a layer of adhesive (42, 43). At least one of the layers of adhesive (42, 43) includes a red dye which is absorbent of light with wavelengths in the overtone bands (32) on the side of the central band (31) of lower wavelength. The red dye improves the perceived red colour of light reflected from the red cell (10R) by suppressing the overtone bands. The provision of the red dye in the adhesive provides several advantages in manufacture.

  • Publication number: 20060182577
Abstract: Loading and unloading apparatus for a refrigerated trailer including a floor with a plurality of ribs extending longitudinally along the floor of the refrigerated trailer with a gap between adjacently disposed ribs, a sub floor disposed over the floor and the longitudinally extending ribs; a plurality of roller tracks disposed on the sub floor, the roller tracks extending longitudinally in the trailer and spaced apart from each other and a plurality of sleepers, the sleepers disposed longitudinally in the trailer and generally parallel with the roller tracks, with at least one of the plurality of sleepers disposed between adjacently disposed roller tracks. Preferably, a refrigeration unit has bifurcated ducts located along the ceiling adjacent to the sidewalls to preserve ceiling height.

  • Publication number: 20030182159
Abstract: A process to structure and summarize the key information required by automated decision-making systems for insurance underwriting is described. The automated underwriting system may be based on rules corresponding to underwriting components, wherein based on the degree of satisfaction of each rule, a component may be assigned to a category, and based on the category for each component, the insurance application may be assigned an underwriting category, or the automated underwriting system may be based on an evaluation of the similarity of a given application to previous application requests, to decide an underwriting category. Most of the key information required for automated insurance underwriting is structured and standardized, except for the Attending Physician Statement (APS), which is almost as unique as each individual physician.

  • Patent number: 6345423
Abstract: The locking ring anvil has a frame assembly and a means for mounting the frame assembly, a pivot assembly is mounted on the frame assembly. A barrel and arbor assembly is mounted on the pivot assembly. The pivot assembly includes means for retaining the barrel and arbor assembly in a fixed position and for rotating the barrel and arbor assembly about a semicircle. The barrel and arbor assembly also include a tapered arbor and a barrel and a means for mounting the barrel about the tapered arbor. The barrel may be rotated about the arbor and moves back and forth on the tapered arbor.

  • Patent number: 4860777
Abstract: A combination beach blanket and wind protector device, including a flexible mat that is movable from a rolled-up, closed, carry position to a flat, open position, wherein the mat is disposed in a substantially horizontal position on a selected ground site, side and head panels being joined to the mat along fold lines thereof, and a plurality of openings being located in said mat in spaced relation adjacent to the side and head panels. A plurality of posts are provided, each of which extends through an opening in the mat for penetration into the ground for fixing the mat in the flat, open position thereon. A first fastening element is joined to the side and head panels, and a second fastening element is secured to the posts, wherein the first and second fastening elements cooperate for mounting the side and head panels on the posts, thereby locating the side and head panels in an upright position for sheltering an occupant who is lying on the mat.
