  • Patent number: 10698836
Abstract: Disclosed herein is a virtual cache and method in a processor for supporting multiple threads on the same cache line. The processor is configured to support virtual memory and multiple threads. The virtual cache directory includes a plurality of directory entries, each entry is associated with a cache line. Each cache line has a corresponding tag. The tag includes a logical address, an address space identifier, a real address bit indicator, and a per thread validity bit for each thread that accesses the cache line. When a subsequent thread determines that the cache line is valid for that thread the validity bit for that thread is set, while not invalidating any validity bits for other threads.

  • Patent number: 10671532
Abstract: A method and a system detects a cache line as a potential or confirmed hot cache line based on receiving an intervention of a processor associated with a fetch of the cache line. The method and system include suppressing an action of operations associated with the hot cache line. A related method and system detect an intervention and, in response, communicates an intervention notification to another processor. An alternative method and system detect a hot data object associated with an intervention event of an application. The method and system can suppress actions of operations associated with the hot data object. An alternative method and system can detect and communicate an intervention associated with a data object.

  • Publication number: 20200159537
Abstract: A system includes a branch predictor and a processing circuit configured to perform a plurality of operations including storing a skip-over offset value in the branch predictor. The skip-over offset value defines a number of search addresses of the branch predictor to be skipped. The operations further include searching the branch predictor for a branch prediction. Responsive to finding the branch prediction, the searching of the branch predictor is re-indexed based on the skip-over offset value associated with the branch prediction.

  • Patent number: 10656950
Abstract: A Spin Loop Delay instruction. The instruction has a field associated therewith that indicates one or more conditions to be checked. Dispatching of the instruction is initially delayed. The instruction is subsequently dispatched based on a timeout, provided the instruction has not been previously dispatched based on meeting at least one condition of the one or more conditions to be checked.

  • Patent number: 10621090
Abstract: A computing environment facility is provided to extend a hold of a cache line in private (or local) cache exclusively after processing a storage operand request. The facility includes determining whether a storage operand request to a storage location shared by multiple processing units of the computing environment is designated hold. In addition, a determination is made whether a state of the corresponding cache line in private cache used for processing the storage operand request is owned exclusively. Based on determining that the storage operand request is designated hold, and that the state of the corresponding cache line in private cache used for processing the storage operand request is owned exclusively, continuing to hold the corresponding cache line in the private cache exclusively after completing processing of the storage operand request. The continuing to hold may include initiating a counter to facilitate the continuing hold for a desired, set interval.

  • Patent number: 10599431
Abstract: Embodiments of the present invention provide a system for balancing a global completion table (GCT) in a microprocessor via frontend steering or stalls. A non-limiting example of the system includes an instruction dispatch unit (IDU) that includes an instruction queue and the system includes an instruction sequencing unit (ISU) that includes a GCT having a first area and a second area. The IDU is configured to determine whether a full group of instructions exist in the instruction queue and to determine whether additional instructions will be received by the instruction queue in a subsequent cycle. The IDU is configured to stall the instruction queue for at least one cycle until a full group of instructions is accumulated at the instruction queue upon determining that additional instructions will be received by the instruction queue in subsequent cycle.

  • Publication number: 20200073670
Abstract: Embodiments include load-balancing a plurality of simultaneous threads of a processor. An example method includes computing a minimum group count for a thread from the plurality of threads. The minimum group count indicates a minimum number of groups of instructions to be assigned to the thread. The method further includes computing a maximum allowed group count for the thread. The maximum allowed group count indicates a maximum number of groups of instructions to be assigned to the thread. The method further includes issuing one or more groups of instructions for execution by the thread based on the minimum group count and the maximum allowed group count for the thread.

  • Patent number: 10579377
Abstract: A guarded storage facility sets up a boundary indicating a range of addresses to be guarded or protected. When a program attempts to access an address in a guarded section defined by the boundary, a guarded storage event occurs. Use of this facility facilitates performance of certain tasks within a computing environment, including storage reclamation.

  • Publication number: 20200065253
Abstract: Effectiveness of prefetch instructions is determined. A prefetch instruction is executed to request that data be fetched into a cache of the computing environment. The effectiveness of the prefetch instruction is determined. This includes updating, based on executing the prefetch instruction, a cache directory of the cache. The updating includes, in the cache directory, effectiveness data relating to the data. The effectiveness data includes whether the data was installed in the cache based on the prefetch instruction. Additionally, the determining the effectiveness includes obtaining at least a portion of the effectiveness data from the cache directory, and using the at least a portion of effectiveness data to determine the effectiveness of the prefetch instruction.

  • Publication number: 20200034302
Abstract: A computer implemented method for saving cache access power is suggested. The cache is provided with a set predictor logic for providing a generated set selection for selecting a set in the cache, and with a set predictor cache for pre-caching generated set indices of the cache. The method comprises further: receiving a part of a requested memory address; checking, in the set predictor cache, whether the requested memory address is already generated; in the case, that the requested memory address has already been generated: securing that the set predictor cache is switched off; issuing the pre-cached generated set index towards the cache; and securing that only that part of the cache is switched on that is associated with the pre-cached generated set index.
