Publication number: 20070183952Abstract: An exhaust gas treatment system having an exhaust gas inlet section, an oxygen enrichment system, catalyst holding arms, and an exhaust gas outlet section is disclosed. The exhaust gas inlet and outlet sections can be designed to mate to existing exhaust gas plumbing systems for industrial facilities. The optional oxygen enrichment system helps optimize catalytic performance by maintaining excess oxygen in the exhaust gas stream and by imparting greater turbulence to the exhaust gas stream. Disposed within each catalyst holding arm is at least one catalyst coated substrate where the catalytic oxidation of formaldehyde and other volatile organic compounds occurs. The catalytic substrate can be catalyst coated bricks, particles, beads, fabrics, or filter materials. Each catalyst holding arm can be selectively closed off using upstream and downstream isolation valves. Catalyst coated substrate longevity can be increased by the inclusion of an optional filter upstream of the catalyst coated substrates.Type: ApplicationFiled: March 4, 2004Publication date: August 9, 2007Applicant: U.S.A as represented by the Administrator of the National Aeronautics and Space AdministrationInventors: Jeffrey Jordan, Anthony Watkins, Bradley Leighty, Patricia Davis, David Schryer, Richard Schwartz, Jacqueline Schryer, Donald Oglesby

Publication number: 20070037698Abstract: A process for preparing an oxidation/reduction catalyst system includes providing a sol-gel precursor; providing a metal oxide wash coat mixture; and dispersing the sol-gel precursor in the metal oxide wash coat mixture to provide a dispersion of sol-gel precursor in metal oxide wash coat mixture. This dispersion of sol-gel precursor in metal oxide wash coat mixture is then deposited on a support, which is subsequently thermally-treated in an oxygen-containing environment to drive off volatiles and oxidize metallic components, thereby producing a thermally-treated support. Finally, a noble metal coating is applied to the thermally-treated support.Type: ApplicationFiled: August 12, 2005Publication date: February 15, 2007Inventors: Anthony Watkins, Jacqueline Schryer, Jerry Summers, Jeffrey Jordan, Bradley Leighty, Patricia Davis

Publication number: 20060283262Abstract: A sensor has a plurality of carbon nanotube (CNT)-based conductors operatively positioned on a substrate. The conductors are arranged side-by-side, such as in a substantially parallel relationship to one another. At least one pair of spaced-apart electrodes is coupled to opposing ends of the conductors. A portion of each of the conductors spanning between each pair of electrodes comprises a plurality of carbon nanotubes arranged end-to-end and substantially aligned along an axis. Because a direct correlation exists between the resistance of a carbon nanotube and its strain, changes experienced by the portion of the structure to which the sensor is coupled induce a corresponding change in the electrical properties of the conductors, thereby enabling detection of crack growth in the structure.Type: ApplicationFiled: June 15, 2005Publication date: December 21, 2006Applicant: U.S.A. as represented by the Administrator of the National Aeronautics and Space AdministrationInventors: Jan Smits, Marlen Kite, Thomas Moore, Russell Wincheski, JoAnne Ingram, Anthony Watkins, Phillip Williams

Publication number: 20060252021Abstract: A requirements based registration system for higher education that decreases students' time-to-degree and credits-to-degree by optimizing the registration process. After students log into the system, they are presented their student profile and degree progression information. Once that information is verified, the system displays the students' available remaining requirements to obtain their desired degree. After students specify the requirement(s) to be satisfied, the system generates fulfillment options that ensure each course selected does in fact satisfy the specified requirement(s). Upon submission of courses, the system verifies that the student is eligible to enroll in each course and also checks if any course can be used in a more restrictive requirement. The system can prevent students from registering for non-degree (ND) courses or allow a set number of ND courses, based on each student's individual profile (e.g., classification). Students must designate the reason for taking ND courses.Type: ApplicationFiled: May 3, 2005Publication date: November 9, 2006Inventors: Harold Watkins, Anthony Watkins

Publication number: 20060054788Abstract: A light sensor substrate comprises a base made from a semi-conductive material and topped with a layer of an electrically non-conductive material. A first electrode and a plurality of carbon nanotube (CNT)-based conductors are positioned on the layer of electrically non-conductive material with the CNT-based conductors being distributed in a spaced apart fashion about a periphery of the first electrode. Each CNT-based conductor is coupled on one end thereof to the first electrode and extends away from the first electrode to terminate at a second free end. A second or gate electrode is positioned on the non-conductive material layer and is spaced apart from the second free end of each CNT-based conductor. Coupled to the first and second electrode is a device for detecting electron transfer along the CNT-based conductors resulting from light impinging on the CNT-based conductors.Type: ApplicationFiled: September 10, 2004Publication date: March 16, 2006Applicant: U.S.A. as represented by the Administrator of the National Aeronautics and Space AdministrationInventors: Russell Wincheski, Jan Smits, Jeffrey Jordan, Anthony Watkins, JoAnne Ingram

Publication number: 20050079115Abstract: The invention described herein involves a novel approach to the production of oxidation/reduction catalytic systems. The present invention serves to stabilize the tin oxide reducible metal-.oxide coating by co-incorporating at least another metal-oxide species, such as zirconium. In one embodiment, a third metal-oxide species is incorporated, selected from the group consisting of cerium, lanthanum, hafnium, and ruthenium. The incorporation of the additional metal oxide components serves to stabilize the active tin-oxide layer in the catalytic process during high-temperature operation in a reducing environment (e.g., automobile exhaust). Moreover, the additional metal oxides are active components due to their oxygen-retention capabilities. Together, these features provide a mechanism to extend the range of operation of the tin-oxide-based catalyst system for automotive applications, while maintaining the existing advantages.Type: ApplicationFiled: September 28, 2004Publication date: April 14, 2005Applicant: U.S.A. as represented by the Administrator of the National Aeronautics and Space AdministrationInventors: Jeffrey Jordan, David Schryer, Patricia Davis, Bradley Leighty, Anthony Watkins, Jacqueline Schryer, Donald Oglesby, Suresh Gulati, Jerry Summers
