  • Patent number: 10290319
Abstract: A method for performing a flaw scan test on a hard disk drive is disclosed. The hard disk drive includes a magnetic recording medium and spindle motor associated with a predetermined rated speed. The method includes writing a test pattern to the magnetic recording medium while operating the spindle motor at a speed greater than the predetermined rated speed. The method also includes reading the test pattern at the greater speed and detecting flaws in response to reading the test pattern.

  • Patent number: 10210899
Abstract: A method for scanning for flaws on a magnetic recording medium is disclosed. The magnetic recording medium has a first set of nonconsecutive data tracks and a second set of nonconsecutive data tracks. The method includes writing a test pattern to only the first set of nonconsecutive data tracks of the magnetic recording medium, reading of the test pattern written to the first set of nonconsecutive data tracks, and identifying flaws within the first set of nonconsecutive data tracks and the second set of nonconsecutive data tracks based on the reading the test pattern.

  • Patent number: 9659585
Abstract: A magnetic sensor has a bottom shield layer, an upper shield layer, and a sensor stack adjacent the upper shield layer. The sensor includes a seed layer between the bottom shield layer and an antiferromagnetic layer of the sensor stack. The seed layer has a magnetic layer adjacent the sensor stack and a nonmagnetic layer adjacent the bottom shield layer.
    Type: Grant

  • Publication number: 20130321954
Abstract: A magnetic layered structure is presently disclosed comprising a pinned layer, a first anti-ferromagnetic layer that defines a magnetic orientation of the pinned layer, a free layer, a second anti-ferromagnetic layer that biases the free layer to a magnetic orientation approximately perpendicular to the magnetic orientation of the pinned layer, and a tuning layer positioned between and in contact with the second anti-ferromagnetic layer and the free layer that tunes free layer bias to a desired level.
