  • Patent number: 7115330
Abstract: A magnetic recording medium including a textured surface that is textured in a predetermined direction. The textured surface preferably has a distance ? between two mutually adjacent texturing lines satisfying a relationship 5<?<30 nm, and an angle ? between the textured surface and an oblique texture plane satisfying a relationship 0.5<?<7 degrees. There is also a Cr-based underlayer provided on the textured surface that has a preferred growth so that a number of grains having Cr<110> in a vicinity of 0 degrees or 90 degrees with respect to the predetermined direction is two times or greater than a number of grains having Cr<110> in a vicinity of 45 degrees with respect to the predetermined direction. Additionally, there is also a Co-based magnetic layer provided on the underlayer that has Co(1120) preferred growth along the predetermined direction.

  • Patent number: 7074508
Abstract: A magnetic recording medium has a base structure, and a synthetic ferrimagnetic structure which is disposed on the base structure and forms a recording layer. The synthetic ferrimagnetic structure includes at least a bottom magnetic layer and a top magnetic layer which are antiferromagnetically coupled via a nonmagnetic spacer layer. The bottom magnetic layer is made of a superparamagnetic layer, and the top magnetic layer is made of a ferromagnetic material. Magnetic moment orientations of the bottom and top magnetic layers are antiparallel at remanent state where an external applied magnetic field is zero. This is achieved since the bottom magnetic layer is in a reverse saturated state due to exchange coupling at remanence, though coercivity is zero for bottom magnetic layer.

  • Publication number: 20060003190
Abstract: A magnetic recording medium is provided with an hcp Co alloy magnetic layer with the crystallographic c-axes tilted at an angle from a substrate surface and fixed relative to a recording direction. The tilt is induced by epitaxial growth of the hcp Co alloy on an obliquely evaporated nonmagnetic polycrystalline underlayer, so that the magnetic recording medium exhibits thermal stability and improved overwrite with a single pole-type head.

  • Publication number: 20050146992
Abstract: A magnetic recording medium includes a first magnetic layer; and a second magnetic layer formed on the first magnetic layer. The first magnetic layer and the second magnetic layer make exchange coupling therebetween and also, have their magnetizing direction in anti-parallel to one another. A net residual area magnetization of the first magnetic layer and the second magnetic layer is expressed by the following formula: |Mr1×t1?Mr2×t2| where Mr1 and Mr2 denote respective residual magnetizations of the first magnetic layer and the second magnetic layer, and t1 and t2 denote respective film thicknesses of them; and the net area magnetization at a first temperature is larger than the net area magnetization at a second temperature lower than the first temperature.
