Patent number: 9525651Abstract: Multimedia communication systems and methods are disclosed. An exemplary system comprises a server adapted to communicate with two or more multimedia endpoints; and a MCU adapted to communicate with the at least one server and the multimedia endpoints, wherein the server contains a module for instructing the multimedia endpoints to call a dial number for the MCU to establish a multimedia conference in response to a requested list of multimedia endpoints received from one of the multimedia endpoints. An exemplary method for establishing a multimedia conference comprises receiving at a server from a first endpoint a requested list of second endpoints desired to participate in the multimedia session; reviewing at the server the status of the second endpoints; and if the status of a particular second endpoint is an available status, instructing at least some of the available second endpoints to call a dial number for a MCU to participate in the multimedia conference.Type: GrantFiled: November 21, 2014Date of Patent: December 20, 2016Assignee: Polycom, Inc.Inventors: Edward Gonen, Guil Yedlin, Anupam Sahai, Shai Toren, Boris Rakhlin

Patent number: 7467220Abstract: Methods and arrangements are provided that integrate media streaming and Quality of Service (QoS) supportive protocols, such as, e.g., Real-Time Streaming Protocol (RTSP) and Resource Reservation Protocol (RSVP), respectively, in a manner that significantly reduces a session's startup latency as well as providing a higher quality of service that is experienced by an end user. The methods and arrangements selectively initiate the streaming of the media data as soon as possible, perhaps at an initially lower QoS, while simultaneously setting up a more desirable or applicable guaranteed QoS path. The methods and arrangements can be implemented in an intelligent manner to dynamically and/or selectively modify the streaming media in response to various network congestion problems, etc. A different/dynamic QoS capability may be setup during an existing streaming operation, and the streaming operation modified accordingly once the new QoS set-up has been completed.Type: GrantFiled: March 19, 2004Date of Patent: December 16, 2008Assignee: Microsoft CorporationInventors: David del Val, William F. Schiefelbein, Hemanth Ravi, Anupam Sahai

Patent number: 6594699Abstract: The present invention is a system in which packet-switched (or general purpose network) multimedia data streaming is controlled based on the capabilities of a client and the preferences of a user. A server processor, coupled to the client processor over a packet-switched network, such as the Internet, receives client processor capabilities in association with a request for service for a multimedia type data transfer. The capabilities can be obtained by an application running on the client assessing the capabilities or through prompting of the user. The client capabilities include, for example, processor speed and multimedia encoders of the client. The server can also obtain the preferences of the user of the client processor and respond based on the preferences. Preferences include, for example, the quality of service of the transfer. The capabilities and preferences can be obtained via a query from the server to the client or can be automatically sent with each request.Type: GrantFiled: October 10, 1997Date of Patent: July 15, 2003Assignee: Kasenna, Inc.Inventors: Anupam Sahai, Ram K.
