  • Publication number: 20060229560
Abstract: A system for delivery of therapeutic and/or diagnostic agents into a living body includes a port assembly having a cannula extending from the mounting side, a port opening away from the mounting side and a resilient barrier between the port and the cannula. An access hub includes a connector positionable at the port for opening the resilient barrier. The access hub is movable in the port assembly, is engaged therewith through a resilient ring coupling and forms a seal with the resilient barrier, reducing the amount of volume to be primed. Inserters, both disposable and reusable, include the cannula insertion member as part of the assembly. A spring loaded port driver is operatively mounted within the housing with movement controlled by a latch. The driver includes a seat for receipt of a port assembly. The cannula insertion member is nonremovably fixed in a socket in the port driver in the disposable assembly.

  • Patent number: 7044931
Abstract: A disposable, single use syringe comprised of a hollow body, a retractable needle assembly positioned in the hollow body, and a plunger assembly in the hollow body. The plunger assembly includes an elongated frame portion including at least one guide track between its ends. A retraction member is releasably secured to one end of the frame and a catch member, including a catch element, is positioned with a guide configured to travel in the plunger frame guide track. An elastic member extends between the retraction member and the catch member. A retention assembly depends from the opposite end of the plunger frame and is configured to receive and secure the catch element and thereby tension the elastic member. The needle assembly and the retraction member have complimentary mating members, whereby the tension on the elastic member is released and the injection means is drawn into the hollow body after the needle assembly and the retraction member mate. A method of manufacture is also provided.

  • Patent number: 7033387
Abstract: A device to provide body fluid flow control in the form of a valve to be located within a duct or passageway. The device is controlled through pressure above a preselected threshold. Bulk resilience about a passageway in a valve body provides the mechanism for controlled flow. One-way valve operation may be provided through a flap or through a pressure differential on the valve body depending upon the direction of flow. A frame structure positioned within a resilient seal includes longitudinally elongate elements which may be of spring material, malleable material or heat recoverable material so as to accomplish an initial insertion state and an expanded anchoring state. A valve support transitions between the resilient seal portion and the valve body to insure that the states do not change the threshold opening pressure. Insertion devices may be employed to position and actuate a change of state of the frame in the body duct or passageway.

  • Patent number: 6869418
Abstract: A safety shield for a needle assembly which includes a cover, a mount and a hinge forming a shield body. The shield body defines a cavity in which a needle assembly having a needle and a luer hub is positioned. The mount includes a socket for receipt of the luer hub while the cover includes a retainer for coupling with the needle assembly. A hinge includes a living hinge between the cover and the mount. A tab encloses one end of the mount. Both the cover and the tab are associated with the mount by means of frangible webs to define a sealed body. A flexible tear strip extends over the cavity to fully seal the body.

  • Publication number: 20040054324
Abstract: A hypodermic syringe employing a plunger slidably disposed within a barrel. The plunger has a mounting hole extending through the seal end thereof to receive a mandrel. The mandrel has a flexible flange to be releasably engaged with the plunger. A spring element withdraws the mandrel into a cavity within the plunger upon full extension of the plunger within the barrel. The barrel includes a hub retainer at the forward end thereof and a needle hub retained therein the mandrel includes barbed tines with surfaces having axes of the conical surfaces that are displaced from one another such that movement of the tines toward one another also brings the axes closer. A catch associated with the back end of the spring element coupled with the mandrel at the other end cooperates with shoulders on smooth surfaces within the cavities to retain tension within the bungee.
