Te zirconium compound is included at a concentration (X) in terms of zirconium of 0.0001 to 1 mol/L, the complexing agent is included at a concentration (Y) of 0.0001 to 0.3 mol/L, the carbonate ion is included at a concentration (Z) of 0.0002 to 4 mol/L, a ratio of the concentration (Y) of the complexing agent to the concentration (X) in terms of zirconium (Y/X) is at least 0.01, a ratio of the concentration (Z) of the carbonate ion to the concentration (X) in terms of zirconium (Z/X) is at least 2.5, and the electrolysis solution has an electrical conductivity of 0.2 to 20 S/m.

    Abstract: A chromate conversion coating with excellent cold workability and protection against corrosion after subsequent painting can be formed on metal surfaces, particularly on galvanized steel sheet, by drying in place on the metal an amount of an acidic aqueous composition comprising (A) from 4.0 to 51.0 g/L of hexavalent chromium; (B) from 6.0 to 38.0 g/L of trivalent chromium; (C) from 0.5 to 97.0 g/L of phosphate ions; (D) a component selected from the group consisting of sulfate ions, nitrate ions, fluoride ions, and mixtures thereof; and (E) a component selected from the group consisting of cations of Cu, Co, Ni, Sn, Fe, and Pb and mixtures thereof, wherein the trivalent chromium/hexavalent chromium weight ratio is in the range from 0.2 to 1.4. Preferably the amount of aqueous composition used is such as to produce a chromium add-on of from 20-160 mg/m.sup.2.

    Abstract: A chromating liquid for forming a chromate film on a Zn or Zn-alloy plated steel sheet, is prepared by adding and mixing a silane coupling agent in a molar ratio of from 0.05 to 0.3 relative to Cr.sup.6+ contained in an aqueous chromating liquid which contains 1-30 g/l of Cr.sup.6+ and 1-30 g/l of Cr.sup.3+ at a weight ratio of Cr.sup.6+ /Cr.sup.3+ ranging from 0.1 to 2.0; and further contains 1-59 g/l of hydrofluoric acid and 1-59 g/l of phosphoric acid at total of hydrofluoric acid and phosphoric acid ranging from 2 to 60 g/l and at a weight ratio of (fluoride ions+phosphate ions)/Cr.sup.3+ ranging from 0.5 to 3.5. and, further said chromating liquid is applied on a surface of the zinc-based plated steel sheet and is then dried, thereby forming the chromate film having a coating amount of from 10 to 150 mg/m.sup.2 in terms of the chromium.
