Patent number: 7794571Abstract: A procedure and arrangement to control the lamella of a headbox's lip channel, when the mass flow goes in the headbox (3) through the lip channel (2), in which case single mass flows are held separate from each other with the lamella (1) before the flows are united after the lamella. The lamella's dimensions, mechanical characteristics and/or dynamic characteristics are changed at least in the lamella's border area with an active structure, which is active and/or passive active tool and/or active and/or passive active material.Type: GrantFiled: March 8, 2006Date of Patent: September 14, 2010Assignee: Metso Paper, Inc.Inventors: Hannu Lepomäki, Petri Jetsu, Jukka T. Publication number: 20080115902Abstract: Fibrous stock is supplied by a paper or board machine headbox (1) between looped forming wires (11, 12). Water is removed in a two part first dewatering zone (Z1), the first part formed by a suction forming roll engaging a forming wire (12) and the second part formed by a fixed forming shoe engaging opposite a forming wire (11). The wires (11, 12) are guided so the first dewatering zone causes essentially non-pulsating dewatering in the stock. Water is removed in a second dewatering zone (Z2) formed by fixed dewatering blades (21) on the other side of the wires (11, 12) and supported against the stock therebetween (21) and on the opposite side of the wires (11, 12) by dewatering blades (24), loaded in a controlled manner against the fixed dewatering blades (21) at gaps (22) between these so that pulsating dewatering is caused in the second zone (Z2).Type: ApplicationFiled: February 1, 2008Publication date: May 22, 2008Applicant: METSO PAPER, INC.Inventors: Antti Poikolainen, Jeffrey Irwin, Michael Odell, Hannu Korhonen, Ari Puurtinen, Sami Anttilainen

Patent number: 6993408Abstract: Paper quality is controlled in the production of a paper web, where paper stock is fed from the headbox of the paper machine onto the wire section, whereby the paper stock is formed into a paper web. The headbox flow rate and consistency are measured from the paper stock fed into the headbox, and the water quantities removed on the wire section during the formation of the paper web are measured on the wire section. In the method, a filler distribution model is established, into which data on the wire section geometry, measured headbox flow rate and consistency and on the water quantities removed on the wire section are entered, and the model is used for establishing an estimate of the filler distribution, and the running values of the paper machine are adjusted on the basis of the estimated filler distribution.Type: GrantFiled: May 1, 2003Date of Patent: January 31, 2006Assignee: Metso Paper, Inc.Inventor: Ari Puurtinen

Patent number: 6942760Abstract: At the end of the twin wire zone of a paper machine former, a suction box (17) inside the upper wire loop (11) has a curved lid (17?) opposite a roll (18) within the lower wire loop (10). The lid is curved in a run situation so the tension of the upper wire (11) reduces the normal force between the wire (11) and the lid (17?) caused by the underpressure of the suction box. The underpressure keeps the web mainly off from the roll (18) and the lower wire (10) while being adhered to the underside of the upper wire (11) and conforming to the curved shape of the lids. Members (17a, 18?) are provided for making the web follow the lower wire (10) in a break situation for conducting it to the broke handling system.Type: GrantFiled: October 26, 2000Date of Patent: September 13, 2005Assignee: Metso Paper, Inc.Inventors: Pertti Heikkilä, Antti Poikolainen, Ari Puurtinen

Patent number: 6605189Abstract: Suction box in a paper machine including a vacuum chamber, a deck or a number of substantially U-section holders open toward a wire and ribs arranged in the deck or the holders so that they can be loaded against the wire. At least in a running situation, the deck of the suction box is curved or the ribs are arranged to provide a curve run of the wire so that the wire tension of the curved run over the deck or ribs serves to lower a normal force which is produced by the vacuum present in the suction box and which is effective between the wire and the deck or ribs.Type: GrantFiled: September 7, 2001Date of Patent: August 12, 2003Assignee: Metso Paper, Inc.Inventors: Jorma Snellman, Antti Poikolainen, Ari Puurtinen, Samppa Salminen

Patent number: 6562196Abstract: The invention concerns a method for optimizing the degree of flocculation in a headbox. The degree of flocculation is measured continuously from a stock flow (M1)/stock flows by means of a detector (R1) of flocculation, and the detector (R1) transmits a signal to a regulator (H1), which regulates the metering of retention agent (10) and/or fillers (11) and/or auxiliary chemicals (12) into the stock flow (M1)/stock flows continuously on the basis of the signal to an optimal level, which stock flow/flows is/are passed into the headbox (P1).Type: GrantFiled: December 15, 2000Date of Patent: May 13, 2003Assignee: Metso Paper, Inc.Inventors: Jyrki Huovila, Juha S. Patent number: 6471827Abstract: A sample collecting device takes samples from the white water drained from the web through the wire in the wire part, at a number of points in the cross direction of the web. An analyzer analyses the samples and forms a retention profile for controlling the paper machine. The device for measurement and regulation of the retention profile comprises means for measurement of the retention profile across the web width from different points of width of the web. The headbox comprises ducts passing to different points of width of the headbox to pass a flow of liquid containing a retention agent in the headbox into connection with the stock flow to regulate the retention profile across the web width. The ducts have valves which are regulated on the basis of the retention profile data for regulating the retention agent into duct flow.Type: GrantFiled: May 24, 2001Date of Patent: October 29, 2002Assignee: Metso Paper, Inc.Inventors: Juhana Lumiala, Antti Poikolainen, Ari Puurtinen, Mika Viertola

Patent number: 6132559Abstract: A method and device for dewatering a paper or board web and passing the web as a closed draw from a lower wire of a web forming section, in which the web is formed between the lower wire and an upper wire, to the press section and through one or more dewatering press nips in the press section. The web is separated from the upper wire on a first suction zone or block of the suction roll, after which the web is affixed to the lower wire over a second suction zone or block of the suction roll. The web is then affixed, in a pre-press and transfer nip formed by the suction roll and a smooth-faced roll, onto the outer face of a substantially non-watering-receiving transfer belt, the web being passed on support of this belt into the first press nip. In the press nip, water is pressed out of the web into a water-receiving press felt.Type: GrantFiled: April 2, 1998Date of Patent: October 17, 2000Assignee: Valmet CorporationInventors: Arto Haavanlammi, Ari Puurtinen, Mika Viertola
