Abstract: A system and method are disclosed for automatically captioning an electronic demonstration using object properties captured from the operating system. In response to an action that is initiated by a demonstrator, the operating system is queried to obtain the property information for the target object to which the action is directed as well as the parent object of the target object. This property information is then used to generate explanatory captions that are displayed to a user or trainee during the playback of the electronic demonstration.

Abstract: A method is disclosed for recording steps performed in a computer environment to produce an electronic demonstration movie. The method includes recording at least one screen shot corresponding to at least one of the steps using a still motion recorder. The method also monitors the steps for the presence of detail criteria. In response to the detection of detail criteria in the steps, the still motion recorded is paused and a video recorder is initiated for recording full motion video clips of a detailed process. In response to the end of the detail criteria, the video recorder is paused and the still motion recorder is re-instated in response to the pausing of the video recorder. The recorded screen shots and recorded full motion video are then compiled into an electronic demonstration movie.

Each of the steps are analyzed to determine if the steps may be represented by a single frame. In response to analyzing the steps, one or more of the frames of video among the steps that may be represented as a single still motion screen shot may be deleted. The remaining frames are then assembled into an electronic demonstration movie.

Abstract: A system and method for tracking access and usage of a help system. The system the invention tracks and records all movements of the user within the help system. Tracking usage patterns helps identify trouble spots within the website. One factor tracked and recorded is the point in the transaction, for example, at which the user required help. Additionally, the help system tracks and records each search request from the user and the help topics selected by the user. Further, the help system tracks and records whether the user successfully resolved the problem and completed the transaction or abandoned the site. For identification and categorization of the user, the help system tracks and records data such as the type of browser used by the user, the user's IP address and the site referring the user to the current website. Additional information may be tracked and recorded as needed.
