Patent number: 6516646Abstract: A device for manufacturing a hollow body from two plates. The device includes an internal high pressure forming tool having an interior surface defining a mold chamber corresponding to a shape of the hollow body. The forming tool being arranged to receive two plates resting against each other. An expansion lance is insertable between the plates via an axial drive, and the expansion lance and the axial drive forming a pushing plunger. The expansion lance has a pinching section along a circumferential contour, and the plates to be pinched are arranged between the pinching section and the forming tool. The expansion lance includes a feed bore communicable with a high pressure fluid source. The expansion lance defines an axial stop to abut axial edges of the plates. The axial stop has a radial periphery which is smaller than that of the mold chamber.Type: GrantFiled: June 14, 2001Date of Patent: February 11, 2003Assignee: DaimlerChrysler AGInventors: Wilhelm Arns, Arndt Birkert, Matthias Schroeder

Patent number: 6301765Abstract: A method and a device for manufacturing a hollow body from two plates, which are placed against one another and inserted into an internal high pressure forming tool. After the forming tool is closed, a fluid is introduced under high pressure between the plates by way of an expansion lance inserted between the plates. The plates are expanded until they abut the interior surfaces of the forming tool that match the shape of the hollow body. To achieve a process-reliable manufacture of the hollow body, the plates, before any internal high pressure is developed, are pinched in the thickness direction along the circumference of the opening that surrounds the inserted expansion lance by cooperation between the dies of the forming tool and the circumferential contour of the expansion lance that is oversize relative to the location between the plates at which the expansion lance is introduced.Type: GrantFiled: July 19, 1999Date of Patent: October 16, 2001Assignee: DaimlerChrysler AGInventors: Wilhelm Arns, Arndt Birkert, Matthias Schroeder

Patent number: 6299242Abstract: A vehicle frame part in the shape of a hollow profile is disclosed, with a hollow profile made of light metal being expanded by high internal pressure deformation. A sleeve made of a material with a greater ductility than the light metal, especially a steel material, is slid onto the hollow profile. The sleeve is located on the hollow profile in such fashion that a predetermined area of the hollow profile is covered that is to be deformed during subsequent expansion with a high degree of deformation that exceeds the expandability of the light metal. The hollow profile is expanded by expansion by high internal pressure within this predetermined area to a degree beyond the bursting limit, whereupon the sleeve alone is expanded, subjected directly to high internal pressure at the burst point in the final shaped hollow profile, until the final shape of the part is reached in the area that is covered by the sleeve that is held at both ends in a press fit against the hollow profile.Type: GrantFiled: April 14, 2000Date of Patent: October 9, 2001Assignee: DaimlerChrysler AGInventor: Arndt Birkert

Patent number: 6143235Abstract: A method and a device for manufacturing secondary mold elements such as necks, protrusions, raised elongate flat locations and the like on elongate, circumferentially closed hollow shapes by means of internal-high-pressure shaping. The secondary mold element is shaped locally by widening of the hollow shape using a high-pressure fluid therein, and is supported under control during the shaping process by a counter plunger that expands outward with increasing shaping. In order to expand the method limits during the manufacture of a secondary mold element for an increase in its height in a safe and simple manner, the hollow section is upset inward by the counter plunger at the point where the secondary mold element is to be produced, whereupon the hollow shape material in the vicinity of the inward upsetting point is pressed circumferentially and endwise by the high-pressure fluid and the plunger.Type: GrantFiled: August 3, 1998Date of Patent: November 7, 2000Assignee: DaimlerChrysler AGInventor: Arndt Birkert

Patent number: 6112567Abstract: The invention relates to a method for shaping a hollow body from a tubular blank inserted into a shaping tool that can be opened and closed, by internal high pressure introduced into the interior of the blank. The cross section of the blank, prior to the internal high-pressure shaping, can be changed and pre-shaped from a round or rectangular shape, depending on the workpiece. In order to be able to produce workpieces with a circumference that varies considerably over the length without overstretching the material, according to the invention, for pre-shaping the blank, a dent that differs in depth over its length is formed in the blank. During the internal high-pressure shaping of the pre-shaped blank to form a hollow body, a U-shaped fold is formed from the dent that projects into the interior of the hollow body, with the walls of the fold abutting one another directly and merging at the periphery with the circumferential wall of the hollow body.Type: GrantFiled: March 25, 1999Date of Patent: September 5, 2000Assignee: DaimlerChrysler AGInventor: Arndt Birkert

Patent number: 6065211Abstract: A method for manufacturing a part in the shape of a hollow profile is disclosed, with a hollow profile made of light metal being expanded by high internal pressure deformation. In order to be able to manufacture parts in the shape of hollow profiles based on light metals, even with high degrees of deformation, in simple fashion in a safe process, a sleeve made of a material with a greater ductility than the light metal, especially a steel material, is slid onto the hollow profile. The sleeve is located on the hollow profile in such fashion that a predetermined area of the hollow profile is covered that is to be deformed during subsequent expansion with a high degree of deformation that exceeds the expandability of the light metal.Type: GrantFiled: July 16, 1998Date of Patent: May 23, 2000Assignee: DaimlerChrysler AGInventor: Arndt Birkert
