  • Patent number: 8300584
Abstract: A method is provided for scheduling transmission resources to a mobile station served by a plurality of base stations. According to the method of the invention, feedback information respecting data received by the mobile station from each of at least two of the plurality of base stations is received by the each of the plurality of base stations. An inference is then drawn at a second of the plurality of base stations of throughput parameters respecting a transmission channel between a first of the plurality of base stations and the mobile station. Transmission resources for the mobile station are then scheduled by the second base station as a function of the inferred throughput parameters.

Abstract: The present invention provides a method of providing rate tiers in a wireless communication system. Embodiments of the method include forming, at a network element in the wireless communication system, a statistical representation of resource usage for a user in the wireless communication system as a function of location and/or time using measurements of the user's resource usage at a plurality of locations. Embodiments of the method also include defining, at the network element, a plurality of rate tiers based on the statistical representation. Each rate tier indicates a rate for a different level of resource usage offered to the user.

  • Publication number: 20120003987
Abstract: A method is provided a wireless system for optimizing network throughput in a wireless communication system. More particularly, the methodology of the invention evaluates the both individual user data throughput as well as the data throughput of a larger user population, in determining the base station to which a user should attach when entering the wireless system. In an alternate embodiment, the invention methodology evaluates such individual user data throughput and the user population throughput in determining whether or not to handoff a data session for a user from one base station to the other.

  • Patent number: 8040802
Abstract: An exemplary method of controlling communications includes determining a total congestion window size for a router device. An allocation of at least a portion of the determined total congestion window size to allocated at least one mobile station that communicates with the router device over a wireless link is determined based on the determined total congestion window size. • Patent number: 7869416
Abstract: A method enables the use of a secondary pilot signal and a secondary antenna(s) in the forward link of a CDMA-based cellular network employing a slotted transmission scheme with a time-multiplexed primary pilot signal, with backwards compatibility. The forward link is divided into a number of time slots. For communications with “legacy” mobile stations that expect transmissions from a single, primary antenna (and that expect a single, primary pilot signal), during some of the time slots, only the primary antenna is used for transmissions, including transmitting the primary pilot signal. Neither the secondary pilot channel nor any other signals from the secondary antenna are transmitted. During the remaining time slots: (i) the primary pilot signal is transmitted from the primary antenna, and the secondary pilot signal is transmitted from the secondary antenna, but at different times; and (ii) data meant for the legacy mobile stations is not transmitted.

  • Publication number: 20100291935
Abstract: A multi-stream wireless relay is arranged to maintain independent data streams with multiple base stations and thereby provide a relay from those multiple base stations to mobile units having respective communication relationships with those multiple base stations. In an alternative approach, the data streams from the multiple base stations are superposed on each other, wherein harmful inter-cell interference is converted into useful information bearing signals, thereby enabling the scheduling of transmission resources from the multiple base stations for a single mobile unit via the relay.

  • Patent number: 7801174
Abstract: A wireless communication system (20) includes a wireless network (30) that selectively modifies an aggregation of voice over internet protocol wireless transmissions. In one example, a mobile station geometry provides an indication whether modification of the aggregation is desirable. For example, a mobile station with a better geometry allows for a higher level of aggregation. Another disclosed example includes determining a current cell load condition and increasing the amount of aggregation and the level of aggregation as cell load conditions increase. Another disclosed technique includes staggering the scheduling of aggregated packets to avoid delays at a scheduler. One or more of the disclosed techniques may be used to efficiently transmit voice over internet protocol communications.

  • Patent number: 7756071
Abstract: A low-cost, low-power, low-complexity, small, high-reliability, robust, seamless satellite communication network is described. The network performs encoding of a user signal at the customer premises to enable routing of the user signal to an appropriate destination beam at the satellite requiring low power user signal processing. Routing information is embedded at the periphery of the network CPE's rather than at the satellite. Embedding the routing information in this way greatly reduces on-board switching complexity and increases signal to interference ratio for the user.

Abstract: An improved method is provided for reducing inter-carrier interference in the CDMA subchannels of hybrid OFDMA-CDMA systems. The results of decoding OFDMA tones are used to at least partially cancel interference from CDMA tones. Then, the CDMA tones are decoded. In specific embodiments, control information is obtained by an initial step of decoding the CDMA tones. The control information is used in decoding the OFDMA tones. Then, the decoding of the OFDMA tones and the decoding of the CDMA tones are performed iteratively, such that at least one instance of OFDMA decoding is used to cancel interference from the CDMA tones, and at least one instance of CDMA decoding is used to obtain improved control information for decoding the OFDMA tones.
