Patent number: 10956874Abstract: A method for creating events for use by an electronic calendar application. A computer device running a calendar application displays a GUI having a representation of a calendar. A first widget on the GUI initiates a software routine for defining an event. The routine generates an interface window having a plurality of event detail widgets which allow the user to interactively define details of the event. Once the details are entered, the event is saved as a multimedia object, and the multimedia object is placed onto the calendar representation. Further, details of the event may include additional multimedia content. Also, the calendar representation itself may include multimedia content. The event may be defined with an approximate time frame rather than a specific time frame. For example, an event may be linked to another event rather than to a specific time frame.Type: GrantFiled: June 21, 2007Date of Patent: March 23, 2021Assignee: Microsoft Technology Licensing, LLCInventors: Boaz Nathaniel Gurdin, Erez Kikin-Gil, Asta Roseway

Patent number: 10854103Abstract: A wearable device conveys information to a user. The device includes a master soft circuit cell and a plurality of actuation soft circuit cells. These cells are physically interconnected to form a garment that is worn by a user and each of these cells includes an electrically non-conductive fabric covering. Each of the actuation cells is electrically connected to and operates under the control of the master cell. The master cell is configured to wirelessly receive actuation instructions and activate a combination of the actuation cells based on the received actuation instructions. Each of the actuation cells is configured to generate a particular actuation that is perceived by one or more senses of the user whenever the actuation cell is activated by the master cell. A system also conveys affective state information to a user.Type: GrantFiled: February 26, 2018Date of Patent: December 1, 2020Assignee: Microsoft Technology Licensing, LLCInventors: Chris O'Dowd, Asta Roseway, Mary Czerwinski, Meredith Morris, Michele A. Patent number: 10163077Abstract: Embodiments described herein relate to enabling a lightweight way of recording and sharing video messages intended to provide input to a future meeting that cannot be personally attended. A person who cannot attend the meeting pre-records their thoughts and remarks for the meeting as video clips for presentation at the meeting. A physical device with at least a display is presented at the meeting. The physically present participants can play the pre-recorded clips on the device. Video of participants' responses to the clips is recorded and made available so that the represented attendee can view the participants' responses.Type: GrantFiled: August 8, 2016Date of Patent: December 25, 2018Assignee: Microsoft Technology Licensing, LLCInventors: John C. Patent number: 9842228Abstract: Systems and methods of a personal daemon, executing as a background process on a mobile computing device, for providing personal assistant to an associated user is presented. While the personal daemon maintains personal information corresponding to the associated user, the personal daemon is configured to not share the personal information of the associated user with any other entity other than the associated user except under conditions of rules established by the associated user. The personal daemon monitors and analyzes the actions of the associated user to determine additional personal information of the associated user. Additionally, upon receiving one or more notices of events from a plurality of sensors associated with the mobile computing device, the personal daemon executes a personal assistance action on behalf of the associated user.Type: GrantFiled: August 10, 2016Date of Patent: December 12, 2017Assignee: Microsoft Technology Licensing, LLCInventors: Michael F. Publication number: 20170172493Abstract: A system is provided that predicts eating events for a user. The system includes a set of sensors each of which is configured to continuously measure a different physiological variable associated with the user and output a time-stamped data stream that includes the current value of this variable. A set of features is periodically extracted from the data stream output from each of the sensors, where these features have been determined to be specifically indicative of an about-to-eat moment. This set of features is then input into an about-to-eat moment classifier that has been trained to predict when the user is in an about-to-eat moment based on this set of features. Whenever an output of the classifier indicates that the user is currently in an about-to-eat moment, the user is notified with a just-in-time eating intervention.Type: ApplicationFiled: December 17, 2015Publication date: June 22, 2017Inventors: Tauhidur Rahman, Mary Czerwinski, Ran Gilad-Bachrach, Paul R. While the personal daemon maintains personal information corresponding to the associated user, the personal daemon is configured to not share the personal information of the associated user with any other entity other than the associated user except under conditions of rules established by the associated user. One such condition is when encountering the presence of another personal daemon associated with another user. Upon encountering the other personal daemon, an iterative process of escalating discover and/or disclosure is commenced to determine whether the associated user of the personal daemon would be interested in engaging with the user associated with the other personal daemon.Type: ApplicationFiled: March 19, 2014Publication date: December 24, 2015Inventors: Michael F. Patent number: 8635293Abstract: Described are systems and user interfaces for facilitating asynchronous communication with video threads. Implementations may enable members of a team to have threaded view of video messages, from which they can capture video, record their screen, and send, receive, and reply to a video message. The screen recording feature enables team members to share parts of their screen while simultaneously narrating, if desired. Video messages are threaded by topic and each conversation is visually represented.Type: GrantFiled: June 13, 2011Date of Patent: January 21, 2014Assignee: Microsoft CorporationInventors: Danyel Fisher, Aaron Hoff, Mary Czerwinski, Kori Inkpen Quinn, Jeremy Barksdale, Paul Johns, Asta Roseway, Gina Venolia, John Tang

Patent number: 8601381Abstract: Providing a customizable online environment for a user on a client. An instruction is received from the user for assigning a background image for the online environment. The online environment is to be rendered on a display of the client. One or more graphical elements are identified on the background image. A profile is received from the user, and the profile includes a plurality of user-customizable data each having properties associated therewith. Graphical representations are provided for the plurality of user-customizable data. Each of the graphical representations depends on and visually indicates the properties associated with each of the plurality of user-customizable data. The provided graphical representations are rendered onto a position of the background image on the online environment.Type: GrantFiled: October 29, 2007Date of Patent: December 3, 2013Assignee: Microsoft CorporationInventors: Asta Roseway, Carolyn J. Publication number: 20130232552Abstract: The subject disclosure is directed towards a technology by which a computing device user may share context-related information (e.g., including current activity) with other recipient machines. A requestor may request to peek at a user's context, and if the requestor is valid (pre-approved by the user), a response based on context-related information is sent, which may be via a cloud service. The response may be filtered and/or adjusted based upon the identity of the requestor and other information associated with that identity, e.g., filtering criteria set by the user. Also described is notifying the user of the peek request, and logging information corresponding to the request and response. A broadcast message may also be sent by the device to share context without waiting for a peek request.Type: ApplicationFiled: March 1, 2012Publication date: September 5, 2013Applicant: MICROSOFT CORPORATIONInventors: Alice Jane Bernheim Brush, Timothy Scott Saponas, Asta Roseway, James William Scott, Ryder B. Publication number: 20130204535Abstract: Described herein are various technologies pertaining to estimating affective states of a user by way of monitoring data streams output by sensors and user activity on a computing device. Models of valence, arousal, and engagement can be learned during a training phase, and such models can be employed to compute values that are indicative of valence, arousal, and engagement of a user in near-real time. A visualization that represents estimated affective states of a user over time is generated to facilitate user reflection.Type: ApplicationFiled: February 3, 2012Publication date: August 8, 2013Applicant: Microsoft CorporationInventors: Ashish Kapoor, Amy Karlson, Mary P.
