  • Publication number: 20170286476
Abstract: An embodiment relates to a computer-implemented data processing system and method for storing a data set at a plurality of data centers. The data centers and hosts within the data centers may, for example, be organized according to a multi-tiered ring arrangement. A hashing arrangement may be used to implement the ring arrangement to select the data centers and hosts where the writing and reading of the data sets occurs. Version histories may also be written and read at the hosts and may be used to evaluate causal relationships between the data sets after the reading occurs.

  • Patent number: 9558085
Abstract: An administrator provisions a virtual disk in a remote storage platform and defines policies for that virtual disk. A virtual machine writes to and reads from the storage platform using any storage protocol. Virtual disk data within a failed storage pool is migrated to different storage pools while still respecting the policies of each virtual disk. Snapshot and revert commands are given for a virtual disk at a particular point in time and overhead is minimal. A virtual disk is cloned utilizing snapshot information and no data need be copied. Any number of Zookeeper clusters are executing in a coordinated fashion within the storage platform, thus increasing overall throughput. A timestamp is generated that guarantees a monotonically increasing counter, even upon a crash of a virtual machine. Any virtual disk has a “hybrid cloud aware” policy in which one replica of the virtual disk is stored in a public cloud.

  • Publication number: 20160350302
Abstract: A range of a node is split when the data stored upon that node reaches a predetermined size. A split value is determined such that roughly half of the key/value pairs stored upon the node have a hash result that falls to the left of the split value and roughly half have a hash result that falls to the right. A key/value pair is read by computing the hash result of the key, dictating the node and the sub-range. Only those files associated with that sub-range need be searched. A key/value pair is written to a storage platform. The hash result determines on which node to store the key/value pair and to which sub-range the key/value pair belongs. The key/value pair is written to a file; the file is associated with the sub-range to which the pair belongs. A file includes any number of pairs.

  • Publication number: 20160110110
Abstract: A computer-implemented data processing system and method writes a first plurality of copies of a data set at a first plurality of hosts and reads a second plurality of copies of the data set at a second plurality of hosts. The first and second pluralities of copies may be overlapping and the first and second pluralities of hosts may be overlapping. A hashing function may be used to select the first and second pluralities of hosts. Version histories for each of the first copies of the data set may also be written at the first plurality of hosts and read at the second plurality of hosts. The version histories for the second copies of the data set may be compared and causal between the second copies of the data set may be evaluated based on the version histories for the second copies of the data set.
