  • Patent number: 10057863
Abstract: An apparatus, computer program, and method are provided for setting a power of a cell node based on cell node gradient information. Cell node gradient information is generated based on a multiple-codeword channel quality indicator (CQI), utilizing a multiple-input-multiple-output (MIMO)-capable cell node in a network configured for communicating with a plurality of MIMO-capable user equipment. Additionally, other cell node gradient information is received that is generated for a plurality of other MIMO-capable cell nodes. The generated cell node gradient information and the other cell node gradient information are processed. Further, a power of the MIMO-capable cell node is set, based on the processing.

  • Patent number: 8577370
Abstract: To perform handoff of a mobile station from a source wireless network controller of one wireless access technology to a target wireless network controller of a different wireless access technology, a first message for initiating a handoff is sent from the source wireless network controller to the target wireless network controller. The source wireless network controller receives, from the target wireless network controller, a second message responsive to the first message, where the second message contains information to enable identification of cell segments neighboring the target wireless network controller for which signal strength measurements are to be performed. In response to the second message, signal strength measurements made by the mobile station are received by the target wireless network controller.

  • Patent number: 8538430
Abstract: A system and method of facilitating handoff of communications with a mobile terminal between a first wireless access network and a second wireless access network having different air interfaces. The system and method including pre-registering the mobile terminal in the second access network prior to handoff, while the mobile terminal is conducting a communication session using the first access network. Upon a determination that a handoff is needed, communication is transparently tunneled to the secondary access network through the primary access network. During tunneling, the air link of the first wireless access network is employed to communicate with the secondary access network to facilitate the handoff.

  • Patent number: 7948937
Abstract: In according with the teachings of the present invention, a method and apparatus for performing fast call set-up in a wireless network is presented (FIG. 2). A number of efficiencies are implemented to diminish the time required for establishing a call in a packet-based network. For example, call initiation (224) and Base Station Subsystem (BSS-202) resource allocation are performed contemporaneously; radio Link resources and packet resources are initiated contemporaneously (242-244); an A10 interface is established immediately after allocating and connecting packet control function (PCF) resources for a packet data session (246); and a service connection request (254) is performed immediately after a channel assignment process (250) is performed.

  • Publication number: 20110032904
Abstract: A wireless communications network includes a first base station system that performs wireless communications according to a first protocol (e.g., 1xEV-DO protocol) and a second base station system that performs wireless communications according to a second, different protocol (e.g., IS-2000). A link is provided between the first and second base station systems to enable a network-initiated handoff procedure. If a source base station system detects that a handoff of a mobile station to a target base station system is required, the source base station system exchanges messaging over the link with the target base station system to perform the handoff. In one example, the handoff is a hard handoff.

  • Patent number: 7113799
Abstract: An access network controller and a base station controller are formed to define an interface there between that enables the two systems to facilitate and respond to a voice call that is to be set up to a hybrid mobile station even though the hybrid mobile station is presently engaged in a data only call. More specifically, the base station is formed to generate a pseudo-page signal to the access network controller to determine whether the hybrid mobile station is present and available prior to the base station generating paging signals to establish the voice call. According to the response received from the access network controller, the base station either pages the hybrid mobile station to establish the voice call, forwards the call to voice mail, or forwards the call either to an Internet Call Delivery Server or to an Internet Call-Waiting Server.

  • Patent number: 6912403
Abstract: A method and apparatus for controlling forward gain transmission values of a base station transceiver system includes adjusting forward gain values according to mobile station power control commands as well as to forward gain values commanded by a base station controller. The forward gain values commanded by a base station controller are used as an input to determining what the forward gain value should be and are not implemented exactly as commanded. Thus, a base station transceiver system formed according to the present invention examines the power control commands received by a mobile station relative to a power gain command received by the base station controller.

  • Publication number: 20050036463
Abstract: The present invention provides for reactivating a plurality of dormant packet data services instances. A mobile station user desires to activate at least one dormant packet data service instance. A service negotiation is initiated between the mobile station data and the wireless support network supporting the mobile station; which includes sending from the mobile station to identify all of the dormant service instances desired to be activated.

  • Patent number: 6577616
Abstract: Methods and apparatuses are provided for CDMA (code division multiple access) access availability to a large cell area, and for traffic channel establishment. A group of cell site modems are configured to look for access attempts generated in respective complete and/or sectorized circular or annular shaped areas centered at the center of the cell area, the areas collectively covering the cell area. To achieve this, each cell site modem has a local clock and the local clock within the first of the cell site modems is synchronized with a standard network time, and the local clock of each of the subsequent cell site modems is offset by a respective delay with respect to the standard network time which causes the cell site modem to search within its respective annular shaped area. A cell site modem is also made available as a traffic cell site modem and is operable to have its traffic acquisition search window centered at a location of an access attempt.

  • Patent number: 6553230
Abstract: A method for allowing a mobile station to find a code transmitted by a base station which has a propagation delay to the mobile station which is much larger or smaller than a propagation delay between the mobile station and a base station from which it derived a time reference is provided. In the context of IS-95, a PN offset is sent to the mobile station to identify which target base station pilot signals to search for. By sending a virtual PN offset which differs from the real PN offset, the mobile station can find the target base station signals where normally they would fall outside the mobile station's search window.

  • Patent number: 6519457
Abstract: Disclosed is an apparatus and method whereby a direct base station to base station communication link is used to bypass message transmissions to an MSC in establishing a soft handoff. By using a standardized protocol for both traffic and signaling messages flowing directly from base station to base station, communications with foreign manufacturers base station equipment may be readily accomplished.
