  • Publication number: 20130087480
Abstract: Corrosive amine salts in hydrocarbon streams such as desalted crude oil streams can be prevented or avoided by adding certain amine scavenging chemicals to the streams to remove the amines therefrom. Suitable amine scavengers include, but are not necessarily limited to, carboxylic anhydrides and copolymers of carboxylic anhydrides, aromatic anhydrides, isocyanates, polyisocyanates, and epoxides. The non-corrosive reaction products of the amines and/or ammonia with these scavengers are preferably oil-soluble, non-basic and thermally stable. The amine scavengers bind up and react with the amines and/or ammonia to keep them from reacting with materials such as acids (e.g. HCl) to form corrosive amine salts.

  • Publication number: 20130081816
Abstract: The present disclosure is directed to a thermothickening composition comprising: a surfactant; and a thermothickening polymer that is the product of at least the following monomers: a non-ionic hydrosoluble unsaturated amide monomer; an ionic monomer; and an unsaturated dicarboxylic acid half ester having a heat sensitive functional group.

  • Publication number: 20130081880
Abstract: A method of designing an earth-boring rotary drill bit includes designing a bit body and cutting elements of the drill bit such that features of the drill bit other than cutting elements engage and rub against the subterranean formation being drilled by the drill bit at depths-of-cut beyond, but close to, an intended median depth-of-cut, and such that the amount of rubbing area between such features and the formation increases at a relatively rapid rate as the depth-of-cut increases beyond the intended median depth-of-cut. Such methods may be employed to mitigate the occurrence of the stick-slip phenomenon during drilling. A method of fabricating a drill bit includes configuring a bit body and cutting elements in accordance with such a design. Earth-boring drill bits include a bit body and cutting elements so configured.

  • Publication number: 20130068536
Abstract: Methods for forming cutting elements comprising polycrystalline materials, methods for forming polycrystalline compacts for cutting elements of a drilling tool, method for forming polycrystalline diamond compacts, and resulting polycrystalline compacts and cutting elements are disclosed. Grains of a hard material are introduced to a press and subjected to a high pressure, high temperature (HPHT) process to sinter the grains. The system conditions (i.e., temperature and pressure) are then adjusted past a phase or state change point, after which, at least one of the system conditions is held during an anneal stage before the system conditions are adjusted to final levels. The resulting compacts and cutting elements may therefore include inter-granularly bonded hard material grains with a more stable microstructure (e.g., less stressed microstructure) than a polycrystalline compact and cutting element formed without an anneal stage during the HPHT process.

  • Publication number: 20130057287
Abstract: An apparatus for determining a distance between a first borehole and a second borehole is provided that in one embodiment includes a rotating magnet on a tool configured for placement in the second borehole for inducing magnetization in a magnetic object in the first borehole, a first coil and a second coil placed radially symmetrically with respect to an axis of the tool, the first coil providing a first signal and second coil providing a second signal responsive to a magnetic flux resulting from the magnetization in the magnetic object in the first borehole, and a controller configured to combine the first signal and the second signal and determining distance between the first borehole and the second borehole using the combined signal.
