Abstract: A variable speed wet sharpener having a support, at least one grinding stone rotatably mounted on the support and having a contacting surface, a container of coolant disposed in a vicinity of the grinding stone for cooling the contacting surface of the grinding stone, a motor having a rotatable drive shaft for rotating the grinding stone, and a speed controller linked to the motor and transmitting signals to the motor for controlling the speed of the drive shaft within a plurality of low speed settings that avoids significant ejection of the coolant from the contacting surface of the grinding stone.

Greater flexibility in the hold down may be achieved by using arms for the hold down that are both rotatable about and can be translated along respective horizontal axes.
