    Abstract: A relationship management system uses a database to store contact information related to a number of contacts and to store a number of folders, each of which reference one or more of the contacts within the database. The relationship management system also stores a set of contact-user pairs defining known relationships between users of the relationship management system and the contacts stored in the database. For each contact-user pair, an opt-in field indicating if the contact-user relationship is to be available for use in determining which users know a specified user is stored. If the opt-in flag is set, information pertaining to the nature of the relationship between the user and the contact, such as a relationship description, an indication of the type or strength of the relationship, etc. is also stored. At any desired time, a user may implement a user-contact reference routine to determine which users know a specified contact.

    Abstract: A device which serves as an artificial pancreas comprises a hollow fiber having an inner diameter of about 5 mm which is surrounded by islets of Langerhans enclosed in a housing. The islets are suspended in a semi-solid matrix which ensures desired distribution of the cells about the hollow fiber. The hollow fiber and suspended islets are enclosed in a housing which further aids the desired distribution of islets about the hollow fiber. The hollow fiber has a porosity which selectively allows passage of substances having a molecular weight of less than about 100,000 Daltons. The semi-solid matrix in which the islets are embedded and suspended is formed of an appropriate supporting material such as alginate or agar.

    Abstract: A filtration device for effecting separation of a blood cell-free liquid filtrate from a blood cell-containing liquid suspension in continuous laminar flow therethrough, employing a microporous filtration membrane. The filtration flow channels along the surface of the upstream side of the membrane wall are provided with a width across the membrane wall surface which gradually and uniformly increases from the inlet end to the outlet end of the flow channel, whereby the membrane wall shear rate of the suspension in laminar flow through the flow channel will gradually and uniformly vary along the length of the flow channel from a maximum value at its inlet end to a minimum value at its outlet end. Such variation in shear rate corresponds with the variation in the transmembrane pressure conditions along the length of the flow channel so as to enable better control of the filtration operating conditions to insure optimal filtration rates per area of membrane without damage to the blood cells.
