  • Patent number: 6980839
Abstract: A method, apparatus, and system for use in providing wireless communication while reducing power consumption includes an in-band system and an out-of-band system, wherein the out-of-band system receives an out-of-band wireless communication and activates the in-band system causing the in-band system to transition from a sleep mode to an activate mode. The in-band system is maintained in the sleep mode. When an out-of-band communication is received, the out-of-band system activates the in-band system such that the in-band system transition from the sleep mode to the active mode. The out-of-band system can further verify the in-band system is an intended target of the out-of-band communication such that the in-band system is activated when the in-band system is verified as the intended target by transmitting an out-of-band identification request, and receiving an out-of-band reply containing an identification.

  • Publication number: 20050188404
Abstract: A remote control device for a TV can be used to select a word in a closed caption text, and if the word is associated with additional content, a list of the content is displayed on the TV. The user can select a piece of content from the list. A dictionary meaning of a selected word may also or alternatively be provided. Alternatively, only a subset of closed captioning words need be shown to the viewer, or the presented words may be defined by the content provider independently of closed captioning text.

  • Publication number: 20050163059
Abstract: Disclosed is a system, apparatus, and method for dynamically estimating the bandwidth of a network link in a wireless network. The system includes at least one client device capable of receiving data over the wireless network and a server capable of transceiving data over a link of a wireless channel of the wireless network. The server identifies the at least one client device in the wireless network and identifies applications that are being utilized in the wireless network by the at least one client device, in which each application has an associated link between the server and the client device and an associated data stream transmitted over the link. The server passively estimates the bandwidth being used by an application over the link based upon measuring the throughput of the associated data stream and based upon determining channel utilization of the link.

  • Publication number: 20050135628
Abstract: Configuration information is exchanged between a home entertainment system server and various wireless components using a secondary link (such as IR, near field, or removable memory media) that is out-of-band with the primary wireless link of the network, to reduce the chances of an unauthorized device gaining entry to the network. Alternatively, the configuration information can be exchanged over the primary link and the received signal analyzed to determine whether the transmitter of the configuration information is within LOS or otherwise within the home or radius that indicates that it is not likely to be an unauthorized device.

  • Publication number: 20050108751
Abstract: A remote control device for a TV has a display on which an electronic program guide (EPG) received from the TV can be displayed, so that the TV itself does not have to superimpose the EPG on the video being shown on the TV screen. Also, video of programs being previewed using the remote control device EPG can be sent from the TV to the remote control device for display. A TV GUI can be sent to the remote as well from the TV or from a PVR associated with the TV.

  • Publication number: 20040224728
Abstract: A user device enters a power save mode in which only the physical layer of its wireless communication system and minimal logic circuitry remains on. In a first implementation the minimal logic circuitry is in the MAC or the digital portion of the radio on a communication card, and the logic monitors the 802.11 traffic indication map (TIM) to determine whether traffic for the user device exists. If it does, the user is alerted or the device is powered on. In an optimum mode the minimal logic circuitry listens for a special sequence unique to the device, and if it detects the sequence leaves the power save mode.
