  • Patent number: 8954267
Abstract: Methods, apparatus, and computer program products for determining a mobile device location. An example of a method for determining a mobile device location includes receiving signals from a transmitter, measuring signal characteristics of the received signals, and downloading data from a database corresponding to a defined region associated with the transmitters. The downloaded data includes a set of position points, a classification of each position point, and expected signal characteristics for each position point. The method further includes comparing the measured signal characteristics with the expected signal characteristics for each position point, assigning a weight to position points based on the compared signal characteristics, and determining the mobile device location by selecting one position point from the set as a position point solution corresponding to the mobile device location based on the assigned weight.

  • Publication number: 20140378111
Abstract: Various methods, apparatuses, devices, and articles of manufacture are provided for use by one or more electronic devices to provide or otherwise identify applications for potential use by a mobile device with respect to a particular environment. For example, a computing device may apply a context-aware filter to identify a list of applications for potential use by a mobile device; and, in response to a first event proffer one or more applications for use by the mobile device; and, in response to a second event withdraw the application for use by the mobile device. In another example, a mobile device may, in response to a first indication that an application has been proffered for use, initiate activation of the application; and, in response to a second indication that the application has been withdrawn for use, initiate deactivation of the application.

  • Publication number: 20140364146
Abstract: A method and system for sharing indoor location information with one or more application program modules within a portable computing device (“PCD”) includes receiving an indoor location data request and determining if a location service is currently being executed by the PCD. If the location service is not being executed, it is determined if a location engine of the PCD has been installed. If the location engine of the portable computing device has not been installed, then the code for the location engine is downloaded from a communications network. Next, the location service may be executed once the location engine has been installed. It is determined if the indoor location data being requested is present in a memory element of the PCD. If the indoor location data being requested is not present in the memory element of the PCD, then the indoor location data is downloaded from the communications network.

  • Patent number: 8874781
Abstract: Systems and methods for delivering social network updates from popular entities to receiver devices via broadcast or multicast networks obtain updates from highly popular entities. Updates may be assembled by a server crawling social network sites. To enable selective reception, the obtained updates may be broadcast/multicast according to a schedule that is communicated to receiver devices in advance, such as a catalog file. Receiver devices receive the catalog file and use the included information to selectively receive updates that are relevant to a user of the receiver device. Updates received from broadcasts or multicasts are cached in memory of the receiver device. When a user requests to access a particular social network entity on the receiver device, that request may be satisfied by accessing social network updates cached on the receiver device. Broadcasting and/or multicasting highly popular social network updates may relieve burdens on unicast networks.

  • Patent number: 8825388
Abstract: The subject matter disclosed herein may relate to methods, apparatuses, systems, devices or articles for generating or using an indoor likelihood heatmap, etc. For certain example implementations, a method for a device may comprise projecting multiple grid points over a schematic map of an indoor area, with the schematic map indicating multiple obstructions of the indoor area. Feasible paths between grid point pairs of the multiple grid points may be determined. For a particular grid point of the multiple grid points, a count of the feasible paths that traverse the particular grid point may be determined. A likelihood heatmap for use in one or more navigational applications may be generated based, at least in part, on the count. Other example implementations are described herein.

  • Patent number: 8633817
Abstract: A displacement device for mapping wireless signal fingerprints includes motion sensors and at least one of a received signal strength indicator (RSSI) sensor and a round trip time (RTT) sensor. The motion sensors may include a pedometer and one or more sensors to receive turn information. The start position of the displacement device is initialized and as the displacement device is moved through an environment, the position of each measurement location is determined using the initialized position and data from the motion sensors. The measurement position along with the RSSI and/or RTT measurement is stored in a database, from which a map can be generated. The position of the access point may be determined using the RSSI measurement or RTT measurement. Additionally, accumulated errors in the measurement position may be monitored and when greater than a threshold, a user may be prompted to reinitialize the position of the displacement device.
