Patent number: 7583951Abstract: The present invention provides virtual batteries for a wireless communication device. Generally speaking, a virtual battery is a logical construct on a wireless communication device that powers a defined set of wireless communication device applications and has a defined power budget from one or more physical batteries on the device. Through judicious assignment of wireless communication device applications and power budgets to virtual batteries, a user of a wireless communication device can efficiently allocate power among competing wireless communication device applications.Type: GrantFiled: April 14, 2006Date of Patent: September 1, 2009Assignee: Sharp Laboratories of America, Inc.Inventor: Benjamin K. Publication number: 20080297662Abstract: A method and system for optimizing performance of a mobile electronic device when processing video content through reduced reliance on software processing by the mobile electronic device in making luminance adjustments to the video content. Software processing by the mobile electronic device is reduced by having a video server node preprocess video content and determine luminance adjustments adapted to optimize mobile electronic device performance when rendering the video content. Software processing by a mobile electronic device is further reduced by having a software-driven processor on the mobile electronic device apply luminance adjustment identifiers received from the video server node to select and load onto a display driver integrated circuit on the mobile electronic device lookup tables having values adapted for application to adjust luminance of the segments of the video content as rendered.Type: ApplicationFiled: June 1, 2007Publication date: December 4, 2008Inventor: Benjamin K. Patent number: 7062034Abstract: An international telephone number is displayed by automatically inserting at least one space after the country code portion of the telephone number. In particular, when a telephone number having an International Direct Dialing (IDD) prefix, such as “00”, “011” and “+”, is received, the telephone number is then displayed by inserting at least one space between a country code portion contained in the telephone number and subsequent numbers of the telephone number. The country code portion of the telephone number is determined by accessing a look-up table for identifying the country code portion of the telephone number. Alternatively, the country code portion could be determined by comparing numbers appearing subsequent to the IDD prefix with predetermined country codes.Type: GrantFiled: August 13, 2004Date of Patent: June 13, 2006Assignee: Sharp Laboratories of America, Inc.Inventors: Benjamin K. Gibbs, Richard Eric Helvick

Publication number: 20030114152Abstract: A wireless data system may transmit and receive RF signals even though a host processor may be inactive. A policy is generated during an active state of the host processor. During a powered-off state of the processor, an RF device remains active to provide RF communications in accordance with the policy and store the RF signals in a memory for retrieval when the host processor again becomes active.Type: ApplicationFiled: December 18, 2001Publication date: June 19, 2003Inventors: Benjamin K. Patent number: 6477382Abstract: A system and method including a flexible paging protocol which adjusts the allocation of resources for paging in response to the amount of actual paging traffic, by increasing resources for paging when paging traffic is heavy and decreasing them when paging traffic is light. A base station transmits a paging packet message over a paging broadcast channel containing a set of paging messages and a next page pointer. The next page pointer identifies when the next set of paging packet message will be transmitted. A user station monitoring the paging channel receives the next page pointer, and, if not being paged, goes to sleep until the next paging packet message is due. When paging traffic is light, paging messages are sent infrequently, freeing up base station resources and allowing the user station to remain asleep longer. When paging traffic is heavy, paging messages are sent more frequently, ensuring rapid response to the pages and reducing the probability of a missed call.Type: GrantFiled: June 12, 2000Date of Patent: November 5, 2002Assignee: Intel CorporationInventors: Carl Mansfield, Izzet M. Bilgic, Benjamin K. Gibbs, Sherman L. Gavette

Patent number: 6356935Abstract: A method and apparatus for an authenticated electronic userid is provided. According to one embodiment, an adapted digital signature is generated for an outbound message from a local user that authorizes a remote user to reply to the message. The adapted digital signature becomes part of an authenticated electronic userid and, when a reply from the remote user is made, the reply message includes the authenticated electronic userid. A one-way hash function is employed to generate the adapted digital signature. According to one embodiment, if an inbound message to a local user from a remote user does not have an authenticated electronic userid, in particular the adapted digital signature, then the inbound message is rejected. An advantage of the method and apparatus described herein is that unsolicited bulk electronic messages and other non-authorized communications to a local user of an electronic message system are reduced.Type: GrantFiled: August 14, 1998Date of Patent: March 12, 2002Assignee: Xircom Wireless, Inc.Inventor: Benjamin K.
