  • Patent number: 10463453
Abstract: An orthodontic appliance includes a portion made of a shape memory alloy having a base alloy composition of at least two different metallic elements and a treated region having an alloy composition that is depleted in at least one of the metallic elements. The base alloy may include a nickel titanium alloy (NiTi), a copper chromium nickel titanium alloy (CuCrNiTi), or a copper aluminum nickel (CuAlNi) alloy. The treated region may be depleted in at least one of copper, aluminum, nickel, and titanium relative to the base alloy composition by exposing the base alloy to a source of energy. The base alloy composition has a first austenitic finish temperature and the treated region has an austenitic finish temperature that may be different than the first austenitic finish temperature. The treated region may form a part of an archwire, a stop, a hook, a crown, a band, or an orthodontic bracket.

  • Publication number: 20180271620
Abstract: A method of forming an aligner includes dipping a positive mold of teeth in a liquid material to form a liquid layer and curing the liquid layer to form a shell. The shell may include an inner layer including material from the liquid material and an outer layer including material from another liquid material. Prior to dipping the mold in the liquid material, features may be coupled to the layer. The features may be selected from the group consisting of an archwire, a sensor, and a bracket. The mold includes model teeth and a gingival margin on a base. Dipping may be to a predefined depth. A fluid level of the material is positioned proximate the gingival margin. The fluid level may define the edge of the shell. A set of aligners including at least one aligner having an edge that defines an opening and the edge is as-formed.

  • Patent number: 10039618
Abstract: An orthodontic bracket for coupling an archwire having a ligature to a tooth includes a bracket body configured to be mounted to the tooth, the bracket body including an archwire slot opened to one side of the bracket body and adapted to receive the archwire therein. At least two tie wings extend from the bracket body, the at least two tie wings each having a tip region and an under tie wing region, and the under tie wing region is configured to receive the ligature. The under tie wing regions each include a curvature in a plane parallel to a longitudinal axis of the archwire slot and extending in the same direction that the archwire slot opens at a location adjacent an outer end of the under tie wing region.

  • Patent number: 9901420
Abstract: A self-ligating orthodontic bracket for ligating an archwire includes a bracket body defining an archwire slot configured to receive the archwire, a movable member movable relative to the archwire slot, and an actuator coupled to at least one of the bracket body and the movable member. The actuator includes a ferromagnetic shape memory alloy and is configured to move the movable member when exposed to a magnetic field. A method of orthodontic treatment using a self-ligating orthodontic bracket having an archwire slot configured to receive an archwire therein and including a ferromagnetic shape memory includes exposing at least a portion of the orthodontic bracket to a magnetic field such that the ferromagnetic shape memory alloy at least partially transforms to a martensitic phase from an austenitic phase, and at least one of inserting an archwire into the archwire slot and removing an archwire from the archwire slot.

  • Publication number: 20170000588
Abstract: An orthodontic bracket having an external rotatable closure member with a plurality of closed positions. The rotatable member includes a body portion that defines an opening for receiving a bracket body. A ligating portion extends from the body portion and has at least one retention arm that forms a lumen in a closed position. An opening defined by the rotatable member receives the cylindrical bracket body. The rotatable member encircles at least a portion of the bracket body. The orthodontic bracket may include a locking mechanism that couples the rotatable member to the bracket body and that provides at least one positive stop in the rotation of the rotatable member. The locking mechanism may include a spring pin and a retention aperture having at least one nonplanar surface. The spring pin slidably cooperates with at least a portion of the nonplanar surface during rotation of the rotatable member.

  • Publication number: 20160175072
Abstract: An orthodontic bracket for coupling an archwire with a tooth includes a bracket body and a rotatable member. The rotatable member is rotatable between an opened position and a closed position. A retention member secures the rotatable member to the body and a locking mechanism that provides at least one positive stop in the rotation of the rotatable member and that produces a discernible indication when the rotatable member is in at least the closed position. In one closed position, the rotatable member actively ligates the archwire and in the other closed position, the rotatable member passively ligates the archwire. The locking mechanism is separate from the retention member and includes at least one pin that slidably contacts the rotatable member. The pin has a longitudinal axis and the retention member has a longitudinal axis. The axis of the pin is oriented perpendicular to the axis of the retention member.
