Abstract: The acetaldehyde compounds, 2-thiobenzoylacetaldehyde diethylacetal, 2-benzoyloxyacetaldehyde bis(2-methoxyethyl)acetal, 2-hydroxyacetaldehyde bis( 2-methoxyethyl)acetal, 2-thiobenzoylacetaldehyde bis(2-methoxy-ethyl)acetal, and 2-thioacetaldehyde bis(2-methoxyethyl)acetal, are useful as intermediates in the synthesis of substituted 1,3-oxathiolanes and substituted 1,3-dioxolanes.

Abstract: Disclosed are compounds of the formula wherein R1 is hydrogen or an acyl group having 1 to 16 carbon atoms; R2 is a purine or pyrimidine base or an analogue or derivative thereof; Z is O, S, S?O or SO2; and pharmaceutically acceptable derivatives thereof. Abstract: Novel pyrano heterocyclic anthracycline derivatives are described, which are useful in the treatment of cancer and tumors, such as breast cancer, leukemia, lung cancer, colon cancer, ovarian cancer, renal cancer, and melanoma. As well, these compounds may be used ex vivo for the treatment of cancerous bone marrow before retransplanting said marrow in a patient. Pharmaceutical compositions and methods of preparing the compounds are also described.
