  • Patent number: 4540712
Abstract: This invention relates to the manufacture of methanol directly from the liquid phase reaction of hydrogen and carbon monoxide, by a homogeneous catalytic process using as the catalyst a solubilized ruthenium carbonyl complex and a promoter for said reaction in the liquid phase.
    Type: Grant
    Filed: December 20, 1983
Date of Patent: September 10, 1985
    Assignee: Union Carbide Corporation
    Inventor: Bernard D. Dombek
  • Patent number: 4434247
Abstract: This invention relates to the manufacture of valuable alcohols containing 1 to 2 carbon atoms, especially glycol and ethanol from the reaction of hydrogen and carbon monoxide, by a homogeneous catalytic process using as a catalyst a solubilized ruthenium carbonyl complex. The invention also encompasses the catalyst formed during the process. A particular desirable embodiment of the invention is the continuous operation thereof in a manner which minimizes inhibition of glycol formation and represses formation of adverse or undesirable glycol byproducts.
    Type: Grant
    Filed: March 16, 1982
Date of Patent: February 28, 1984
    Assignee: Union Carbide Corporation
    Inventor: Bernard D. Dombek
  • Patent number: 4429057
Abstract: A homogeneous catalytic process wherein a gaseous or vaporized reactant stream is continuously introduced into a liquid phase mixture containing (a) a volatile precious metal catalyst, and (b) methanol and/or ethanol as reactant or reaction product, at least a portion of the volatile precious metal being continuously removed from the liquid phase mixture by the effluent gas and/or vapor stream, and such effluent stream is an integral component of a cyclic process stream and/or a vent stream discharged from the process.
    Type: Grant
    Filed: August 26, 1982
Date of Patent: January 31, 1984
    Assignee: Union Carbide Corporation
    Inventors: Bernard D. Dombek, George L. O'Connor
  • Patent number: 4323513
Abstract: This invention is concerned with improving ethylene glycol ester production from the reaction of carbon monoxide and hydrogen in a homogeneous liquid phase mixture containing a ruthenium carbonyl complex catalyst and acyl compound by maintaining the combined concentration of methyl ester, ethylene glycol ester and water in the reaction medium at less than about 30 volume percent. In a preferred embodiment, a continuous process is operated in such a manner that the methyl ester, ethylene glycol ester and water products are removed from the reactor so as to maintain their total volume concentration in the reaction medium at less than about 30 percent.
    Type: Grant
    Filed: November 4, 1980
Date of Patent: April 6, 1982
    Assignee: Union Carbide Corporation
