  • Patent number: 5322569
Abstract: Biofouling of underwater surfaces by marine organisms is prevented by irradiating the surfaces or the adjacent water with ultraviolet light and adjusting the intensity of the ultraviolet light so as to kill or temporarily stun marine organisms to prevent their attachment to the underwater surface.
    Type: Grant
    Filed: October 8, 1991
Date of Patent: June 21, 1994
    Assignee: General Dynamics Corporation
Inventors: James M. Titus, Bernard S. Ryskiewich
  • Patent number: 5308505
Abstract: Biofouling of underwater surfaces by marine organisms is prevented by irradiating the water with ultraviolet light and adjusting the intensity of the ultraviolet light so as to kill barnacle larvae to prevent their attachment to the underwater surface. The water is passed through a biocidal chamber having a source of ultraviolet light at an intensity of at least 4000 .mu.watts/cm.sup.2 and at a rate to provide a residence time of at least one minute on the biocidal chamber.
    Type: Grant
    Filed: November 5, 1992
Date of Patent: May 3, 1994
    Assignee: General Dynamics Corporation
Inventors: James M. Titus, Bernard S. Ryskiewich
  • Patent number: 3984302
Abstract: Marine fouling of the tubes of heat exchangers, piping conduits, and like apparatus through which sea water flows is controlled with the aid of an assembly mounted in situ within the system at the inlet ends of the tubes which generates chlorine gas by electrolytic action. The chlorine gas is distributed by the flowing sea water through the tubes and prevents the accumulation of marine plant and animal material on the internal surface of the tubes, thus controlling marine fouling.
    Type: Grant
    Filed: November 18, 1974
Date of Patent: October 5, 1976
    Assignee: General Dynamics Corporation
Inventors: Bernard J. Freedman, Bernard S. Ryskiewich
