  • Publication number: 20040101723
Abstract: The invention relates to a portable electrochemical oxygen generator, comprising: a proton-conducting polymer electrolyte membrane (PEM) (1); a water-filled, porous anode (2), with an anode chamber (6); a porous air cathode (3), with a cathode chamber (5), whereby the PEM, anode and cathode form a PEM-cell; a direct current source (4); a cathode gas condensate separator (7), connected to the anode chamber by means of a condensate line and a pump (8), to form a water-cooling circuit; a reservoir with reducing valve (9) for the oxygen generated and a controller/regulator unit (11), for the control/regulation of the oxygen generation, the air feed and the temperature of the PEM-cell.

  • Patent number: 6420062
Abstract: The invention relates to a double layer cathode for molten carbonate fuel cells, containing a first layer (2a) consisting of a first cathode material, preferably lithium-treated nickel oxide, and a second layer (2b) consisting of cerium-activated lithium cobaltite. The inventive double layer cathode is characterised in that the polarization resistance is less dependent on temperature and in that it has a longer life. The double layer cathode is especially suitable for operating a fuel cell at less than 650° C. The material for the second cathode layer (2b) is produced by activating cobalt oxide by co-precipitation with cerium and treating it with lithium carbonate to form a suspension. Said suspension is then applied to the first cathode layer (2a) as a second cathode (2b), dried and sintered at a high temperature.

  • Patent number: 6361896
Abstract: The invention relates to a device for combined purification and compression of hydrogen containing CO. Said device comprises a polymer electrolyte membrane (PEM) cell with a proton-conducting polymer membrane (3), an anode on one side of the membrane and a cathode (4) on the other side thereof. Said anode is in the form of a two-layer anode (5) which comprises a CO-oxidation-selective catalytic layer (1) on the side facing away from the membrane and an electrochemically active layer (2) for oxidation of the hydrogen to form protons on the side facing the membrane. The PEM cell also has a flat, porous gas distribution layer provided on the anode side and attached to a current collector. Consequently, the PEM cell resists differential pressures of at least approximately 10 bar. The invention also relates to a process for combined purification and compression of hydrogen containing CO using said device.

  • Patent number: 6238619
Abstract: The invention concerns a process for the production of a porous lithium cobaltite electrode plate with a large inner surface and low polarization resistance. Lithium carbonate powder and cobalt metal powder are uniformly mixed together and then films are produced from the mixture and plates from the films, which plates are sintered and then placed in an air stream for several hours at a temperature between 400° C. and 488° C. until the conversion of said plates to lithium cobaltite electrode plates with an extremely large inner surface has taken place.

  • Patent number: 5582624
Abstract: The invention provides a process for producing the cathode layer of a molten-carbonate fuel cell in which the cathode layer is present in a layer arrangement with a matrix layer and an anode layer. A porous cobalt or iron layer is filled with lithium carbonate, the cobalt or iron layer is oxidized at a temperature below the melting point of the lithium carbonate in an oxidizing atmosphere to form a cobalt oxide or iron oxide layer, and subsequently, after the temperature is increased above the melting point of the lithium carbonate, the cobalt oxide or iron oxide is reacted with the molten lithium carbonate to form lithium cobaltite or lithium ferrite.
