  • Patent number: 4706569
Abstract: A projectile, e.g. a subcaliber projectile to be fired from the barrel of a weapon, comprises an elongated main body having a central bore and forming a projectile of the inertial or impact type, the bore receiving a caliber or subcaliber auxiliary projectile and an appropriate charge so that a proximity fuse on the main projectile body can fire the auxiliary projectile body in an armor breaking fashion to facilitate penetration by the main body of the armored vehicle. Both projectiles are of the impact or inertial type in which their kinetic energy enables them to pierce the armor.

  • Patent number: 4702172
Abstract: A sabot arrangement is produced in accordance with an improved manufacturing method. The sabot arrangement includes a rotational symmetrical sabot body having a central axial bore and radial separating grooves or slots. The radial grooves or slots divide the sabot body into a plurality of equal segments. These slots nearly sever the sabot body into separate segments, so that a material bridge remains near a forward edge and a material bridge remains near a rear edge of the sabot body, which material bridges function as fracture zones.

  • Patent number: 4671180
Abstract: An improved armor-piercing inertial penetrator projectile having a prepenetrator which has a substantially uniform flight diameter D, over substantially its entire length. A prepenetrator assembly is formed by a plurality of elements which are adapted to interact with the material of the corresponding target upon impact so as to form an effective surface which has a diameter larger by a predetermined amount than the flight diameter D of the prepenetrator.

  • Patent number: 4662280
Abstract: An improved explosive and incendiary full caliber projectile having a high splinter effect. The projectile produces a reliable incendiary effect at impact by releasing splinters from the casing. It is of simple construction and the casing and splinters have a high penetration capability in particular when the projectile is less than 40 mm in caliber. At least a preponderantly longitudinal portion of the casing is made of a homogeneous substance consisting of a heavy metal alloy having a density in excess of 17 g/cm.sup.3. By using a sintered high tungsten content casing a relatively larger volume of an explosive charge can be used which enhances the penetration capability and splinter swarm producing effect of the projectile at impact.

  • Patent number: 4638738
Abstract: In a spin stabilized flight shell, a front body and a rear body are attached to each other at a first joint, and a pointed body is attached to the front body at a second joint. The materials of the front and rear bodies contain a high proportion of at least one metallic element having a density of at least 18 g/cm.sup.3. The rear body has higher ductility than the front body, which in turn is more brittle, so that it fragments easily. In one embodiment, a case can be used to protect the first joint and the front body prior to impact. The case is developed in a circumferential region as a form locking zone, for interaction with a drive cage. The front and rear bodies and the case 38 are connected at a contact zone, for example by brazing, and is of circular cylindrical shape with a diameter equal to that of the front and rear bodies. At the rear, the case is developed into a support for the stabilizing fin assembly, and is provided with a internal compartment for a tracer composition.

  • Patent number: 4616569
Abstract: An armor-penetrating projectile comprises an outer substantially cylindrically tubular member of great length/diameter ratio and density, centered on an axis, and having an axially throughgoing bore defined by an inner surface and an axially elongated inner member of greater strength and elasticity than the outer member extending axially through the bore the full length of the outer member and having an outer surface in tight radial contact with the inner surface of the outer member at at least a plurality of annular locations spaced along the axis. This inner member can be a bundle of wires that is inserted through the bore after the outer member has been expanded by heat, then twisted and longitudinally prestressed to lock tightly in the outer member.

  • Patent number: 4598644
Abstract: A subcaliber projectile having a sabot formed by a plurality of segments is provided. The joined segments forming the sabot, present a gas pressure receiving surface 52 which is covered by a sealing foil 54 formed by a foil material made out of the propellant charge material to seal the joints formed on the gas pressure receiving surface. This foil material is firmly bonded to a portion 62 of the propellant charge proper.

  • Patent number: 4542696
Abstract: A munitions round for a subcaliber projectile to be fired from a barrel-type weapon has a casing, of a uniform outer cross section substantially over its entire length, receiving the projectile which is at least partially surrounded by the gas-generating propellant charge. A drive body is mounted at the forward end of the projectile and has a rearward pressure-receiving surface which droops inwardly toward the projectile from an outer edge of the body which is engaged by the casing. The body is formed from a plurality of segments which form-fittingly hug the projectile and have confronting angularly spaced separating surfaces bridged by a sealing member. The forward end of the body, formed by the segments, is concave forwardly and has a leading edge which is disposed outwardly and axially ahead of the rearward inner edge of this surface which forms a pocket engaging the air upon propulsion of the projectile from the barrel to effect separation of the segments and dislodgment of the body.

  • Patent number: 4524695
Abstract: The technical area of the present invention relates to an anti-tank weapon comprising a finned projectile of the arrow type and a launching shoe. The projectile of the invention comprises a shoe 2 the rear portion of which has fins 10 provided with pins 11 which rest against the compression cone 7 of the tube of the weapon. These fins make it possible to obtain practically constant compressive pressure and assure a proper guidance of the projectile during the barrel phase.Application to the field of armaments.
