  • Patent number: 5404776
Abstract: Apparatus for trimming away the open end of an untrimmed can body using a plurality of can trimming apparatuses mounted on a rotating turret wherein each can trimming apparatus has a rotatable first shaft having a radially outer or inner knife and a knurling roller mounted thereon for rotation therewith and a second rotatable shaft having a radially inner or outer knife and a knurling segment mounted thereon for rotation therewith and wherein, for each complete revolution of the turret, the first shaft makes three complete revolutions and the second shaft makes one complete revolution. Also, an arrangement of gears is provided for rotating the firs and second shafts.

  • Patent number: 5056350
Abstract: Apparatus and method for stripping a can body having an open end and a closed end from the punch on a reciprocating ram of a can body making apparatus wherein a cavity exists between the closed end and the punch and wherein the ram has a forward stroke and a return stroke by moving the closed end into contact with doming apparatus during the forward stroke to move a valve from a closed to an opened position to feed air under pressure into the cavity to hold the closed end against the doming apparatus during the return stroke until the can body is separated from the punch and ejecting the stripped can body from the doming apparatus.

  • Patent number: 5054341
Abstract: Apparatus and method for trimming away a portion of the open end of an untrimmed can body to form a trimmed can body and a trimmed away portion using a plurality of can trimming apparatuses which are mounted on a turret which is secured to a main drive shaft for rotation therewith. Each of the can trimming apparatus has mechanisms for cutting the untrimmed can body to form a trimmed can body and a trimmed away portion; for separating the trimmed can body from the trimmed away portion by moving both in one axial direction and then only the trimmed can body in the opposite axial direction; for loading untrimmed can bodies onto each can processing apparatus and for unloading trimmed can bodies therefrom and for cutting, knurling and disposing of the trimmed away portions.

  • Patent number: 4976131
Abstract: A redraw apparatus is provided for a can body making apparatus wherein the redraw carriage of the redraw apparatus is mounted for substantially friction-free sliding reciprocating movement over a pair of spaced apart support posts which are fixedly mounted on the housing holding the can forming and ironing dies. Also, a counterbalancing system is provided for applying a force to counterbalance the weight of a portion of structures used to reciprocate the redraw carriage. Additionally, a raw assembly is provided for supporting a ram for movement through the redraw apparatus and the can forming and ironing dies wherein a pair of spaced apart elongated shafts are fixedly mounted and a ram carriage having the ram attached thereto is provided with liquid bearings using liquid coolant comprising water having solubles contained therein for mounting the ram carriage on the elongated shafts for substantially friction free movement thereover. A guide liquid bearing is also used to ensure proper alignment of the ram.

  • Patent number: 4969635
Abstract: A collapsible mandrel for use in holding a can body in a process wherein a portion of the can body having uneven edges on the open end thereof is trimmed away is provided and comprises a hollow support member having a longitudinal axis and mounted at a relatively fixed location and having a plurality of axially and radially outwardly extending resilient fingers integral therewith and an elongated hollow member mounted on the hollow support member to provide for linear movement therebetween. The elongated hollow member has a bearing surface in contact with the resilient fingers so that movement of the elongated hollow member varies the radially outwardly extent of the resilient fingers so that can bodies having inner peripheral surfaces of differing inner diameters may be readily moved over the resilient fingers but wherein the resilient fingers will exert a sufficient force thereon so that the can body will rotate with the resilient fingers.
