Patent number: 8181413Abstract: A roofing shingle is provided. The roofing shingle includes an overlay sheet including a headlap portion and a tab portion and an underlay sheet secured to the overlay sheet such that a region of the underlay sheet overlaps a region of the headlap portion of the overlay sheet. Said underlay sheet has a substantially uniform thickness. A reinforcement member is secured to the headlap portion. The reinforcement member is formed from a material selected from the group consisting of paper, film, scrim, woven, and non-woven material. The reinforcement member and the portion of the headlap portion to which the reinforcement member is secured to improve nail pull-through. At least some of the reinforcement member does not overlap the overlapping regions of the headlap portion and the underlay sheet. Said reinforcement member provides said overlay sheet with a non-uniform thickness.Type: GrantFiled: September 30, 2010Date of Patent: May 22, 2012Assignee: Owens Corning Intellectual Capital, LLCInventors: James S. Patent number: 8156704Abstract: A bundle of laminated shingles is provided. The bundle includes a plurality of shingles having an overlay laminated with an underlay. The overlay has a tab portion with cutouts normally exposed on a roof and a headlap portion. The headlap portion has a lower zone adjacent the tab portion and an upper zone adjacent said lower zone. The lower zone has substantially no granules adhered thereto. The bundle defines a central area that substantially encompasses the lower zones of the stacked shingles. The shingles are stacked such that every other of the shingles is inverted and turned 180 degrees relative to an adjacent shingle. The shingles are double-layered, wherein the lack of granules in the lower zones of the stacked shingles results in the central area of the bundle having a height substantially identical to a height of a remainder of the bundle outside of the central area.Type: GrantFiled: February 28, 2011Date of Patent: April 17, 2012Assignee: Owens-Corning Fiberglas Technology, Inc.Inventors: James S. The roofing shingle includes a coated mat having a roofing mat coated with an organic-based coating material. The coated mat has a width that extends entirely through the buttlap portion and does not extend more than 20% into the headlap portion of the roofing shingle. A water impermeable sheet is adjacent to the coated mat. The sheet has a width that extends from a head edge through at least 80% of the headlap portion and does not extend to a butt edge of the roofing shingle. A nail zone region is formed at an overlap of the coated mat and the water impermeable sheet. The nail zone region is marked by a dissimilar material.Type: ApplicationFiled: June 8, 2011Publication date: September 29, 2011Inventors: James S. Belt, Bert W. Elliott

Publication number: 20110209428Abstract: A laminated shingle simulates a slate roof when placed with other similar shingles on a roof deck. The laminated shingle includes an overlay member and an underlay member fixedly attached to each other such that the lower edges of the overlay and underlay members are generally co-linear with each other. The overlay member includes an upper or headlap portion and a lower or exposed butt portion with one or more generally rectangular-shaped tabs separated by relatively narrow cutouts. In one embodiment, the width of each tab is randomly selected. Preferably, the entire front surface of the underlay member is coated with a layer of relatively dark granules to enhance the slate simulating aspect of the shingle. In. another embodiment, the overlay member also includes a layer of relatively dark granules randomly applied to the upper and lower edges of the tabs.Type: ApplicationFiled: February 1, 2011Publication date: September 1, 2011Applicant: OWENS CORNING INTELLECTUAL CAPITAL, LLC.Inventor: Bert W.
