  • Patent number: 5728760
Abstract: A method of making flame retarded polyurethanes by including a bromobenzoate compound in the polyurethane mixture. Also disclosed is a method of making flame retarded polyvinyl chlorides, unsaturated polyesters and epoxy resins by incorporating a bromobenzoate compound into the polymer system. The bromobenzoate compounds of the invention may also be used as plasticizers for PVC and rubber.
    Type: Grant
    Filed: April 11, 1995
Date of Patent: March 17, 1998
    Assignee: Great Lakes Chemical Corporation
Inventors: Richard S. Rose, Bhabatosh Bhattacharya, Nicolai A. Favstritsky
  • Patent number: 5637757
Abstract: A method of preparing tetrabromobenzoate compounds from tetrabromophthalic anhydride by reacting tetrabromophthalic anhydride with alcohol in the presence of a decarboxylation catalyst. The reaction may be carried out in an excess of alcohol, or with a near stoichiometric amount of alcohol by performing the reaction in an inert solvent.

  • Patent number: 5352844
Abstract: This invention relates to a process for isolation of partially brominated diphenyl ether mixtures ("Octabrom") having an average bromine content of 7.2-8.5. The process comprises: (i) adding a C.sub.1 -C.sub.4 alkanol to the Octabrom in solution in an organic solvent; (ii) maintaining the contact of the alkanol with Octabrom in the organic solvent for that period of time which is sufficient to allow the Octabrom to precipitate in crystalline form, making a slurry; and (iii) recovering the final Octabrom from the slurry.
    Type: Grant

Date of Patent: October 4, 1994
    Assignee: Great Lakes Chemical Corporation
Inventors: Bhabatosh Bhattacharya, Wayne C. Muench
  • Patent number: 4835322
Abstract: 4,4'-dibromodiphenyl ether may be obtained in high yield and purity by the uncatalyzed "neat" bromination of diphenyl oxide, followed by methanol digestion.
    Type: Grant
    Filed: October 19, 1987
Date of Patent: May 30, 1989
    Assignee: Great Lakes Chemical Corporation
Inventors: Rastko I. Mamuzic, Bhabatosh Bhattacharya
  • Patent number: 4754053
Abstract: Bis(2-ethyl-1-hexyl) tetrabromophthalate produced by the reaction of tetrabromophthalic anhydride with 2-ethyl-1-hexanol in the presence of titanium isopropoxide catalyst may be purified by contacting the reaction mixture with sodium carbonate decahydrate with agitation for a time and at a temperature sufficient to enhance product quality, followed by isolation of bis(2-ethyl-1-hexyl) tetrabromophthalate.
