Patent number: 10171260Abstract: Techniques are provided to manage how router advertisement messages are forwarded for ultimate wireless transmission in a wireless network. In one embodiment, a multicast router advertisement message intended for a virtual local area network is converted into individual unicast router advertisement messages directed to specific wireless mobile client devices that are part of that virtual local area network. In another embodiment, router advertisement messages are routed between controllers according to the current location of a wireless mobile client device. In still other embodiments, techniques are provided to minimize the volume of the router advertisement messages sent over a wireless network, and to proactively send a unicast router advertisement message to a mobile client device that has performed a handoff, without waiting for a router solicitation message.Type: GrantFiled: June 6, 2016Date of Patent: January 1, 2019Assignee: Cisco Technology, Inc.Inventors: Srinath Gundavelli, Abhijit Choudhury, Rohit Suri, Venkatesh Kanagasabapathy, Bhavannarayana Nelakanti, Sudhir Jain

Patent number: 8724583Abstract: Techniques are provided herein to support roaming of wireless mobile client devices from one wireless local area network access point device to another wireless local area network access point device. Neighbor discovery messages are received from wireless mobile client devices. A neighbor discovery message specifies a target address for a neighbor discovery function. A response to a neighbor discovery message is sent to a wireless mobile client device such that the response message appears to have been sent by a wireless mobile client device that has an address that corresponds to the target address of the neighbor discovery message.Type: GrantFiled: November 4, 2009Date of Patent: May 13, 2014Assignee: Cisco Technology, Inc.Inventors: Srinath Gundavelli, Abhijit Choudhury, Rohit Suri, Venkatesh Kanagasabapathy, Bhavannarayana Nelakanti, Sudhir Jain

Patent number: 7493084Abstract: A method for associating a WSTA to a service set, wherein the service set is configurable at the AP. Each service set is an arbitrary grouping of one or more network service parameters, and is typically configured for either VLAN or proxy mobile IP host. When a wireless station desires to associate with an access point, the wireless station sends a message to the access point, the message containing a SSID. The access point then matches the SSID to a service set and associates the WSTA to either a home subnet or a VLAN based on the SSID. By locally configuring the service set, the default VLAN and home subnet for a WSTA may be different at each AP the WSTA encounters. A security server is configured with a list of allowed SSIDs for each wireless station to prevent unauthorized access to a VLAN or home subnet.Type: GrantFiled: April 15, 2005Date of Patent: February 17, 2009Inventors: Robert C. Meier, Tim Olson, Victor J. Griswold, Sheausong Yang, Bhavannarayana Nelakanti

Publication number: 20060019664Abstract: A communication system formed by a private wireless network that can be used with public wireless networks using a public wireless protocol, such as GSM, and typically includes public networks, such as PSTN, ISDN and the Internet, using a wired-packet protocol, such as IP. The private network also typically includes a local area network (LAN) and the private network typically connects to the public networks using the wired-packet protocol, such as IP. The public and private wireless networks operate with the same public wireless protocol, such as GSM, and the private wireless network additionally operates with the wired-packet protocol, such as IP. In this environment, multiple wireless cells are present and inter-cell handovers employ multiple protocols including the wired-packet protocol.Type: ApplicationFiled: September 6, 2005Publication date: January 26, 2006Inventors: Bhavannarayana Nelakanti, Ian Sayers, Paul Long
