Publication number: 20140050763Abstract: The present invention relates to a method for reducing the occurrence and severity of infectious diseases, especially infectious diseases in which lipid-containing infectious viral organisms are found in biological fluids, such as blood. The present invention employs solvents useful for extracting lipids from the lipid-containing infectious viral organism thereby creating modified viral particles with reduced infectivity and enhanced antigenicity. The present invention provides vaccine compositions, comprising these modified viral particles with reduced infectivity and enhanced antigenicity, optionally combined with a pharmaceutically acceptable carrier or an immunostimulant. The vaccine composition is administered to a patient to provide protection against the lipid-containing infectious viral organism. The vaccine compositions of the present invention include combination vaccines of modified viral particles obtained from one or more strains of a virus and/or one or more types of virus.Type: ApplicationFiled: October 30, 2013Publication date: February 20, 2014Applicant: ELI LILLY & COMPANYInventors: BILL E. Publication number: 20080220017Abstract: The present invention relates to a method for reducing the occurrence and severity of infectious diseases, especially infectious diseases in which lipid-containing infectious organisms are found in biological fluids, such as blood. The present invention employs solvents useful for extracting lipids from the lipid-containing infectious organism, thereby reducing the infectivity of the infectious organism. The present invention uses optimal solvent systems such that the lipid envelope around the viral particle is dissolved while the viral particle remains intact, resulting in a modified viral particle. The present invention also provides an autologous vaccine composition, comprising a lipid-containing infectious organism, treated with solvents to reduce the lipid content of the infectious organism, combined with a pharmaceutically acceptable carrier. The vaccine composition is administered to an animal or a human to provide protection against the lipid-containing infectious organism.Type: ApplicationFiled: May 9, 2008Publication date: September 11, 2008Applicant: Lipid Sciences, Inc.Inventors: Bill E. Publication number: 20040106556Abstract: The present invention relates to a method for preventing, reducing the progression of, and treating Alzheimer disease (AD), by creating delipidated protein particles and lipoprotein particles including at least one of LDL, VLDL, or HDL, other particles associated with lipid transport and metabolism, and combinations thereof, and administering these delipidated particles to patients at risk of developing AD or patients diagnosed with AD. The present invention employs energy and solvents useful for extracting lipids and cholesterol from the lipid-containing plasma and forming delipidated protein particles and lipoprotein particles. The present invention uses optimal solvent systems such that the lipid is dissolved while other plasma proteins are relatively intact. The present invention also provides a method of combining plasma delipidation and particle administration with other therapeutic interventions for prevention and treatment of AD.Type: ApplicationFiled: August 26, 2003Publication date: June 3, 2004Inventors: Yanhong Zhu, Jo-Ann B. Publication number: 20030133929Abstract: A method of treating an animal infected by an infectious agent having a lipid envelope or membrane, the method including draining blood from the animal, separating blood cells from plasma, contacting the plasma with a solvent system comprising a solvent in which lipids are soluble and in which hematological and biochemical constituents are substantially stable, for a time sufficient to reduce active levels of the infectious agent in the plasma, separating the plasma from the solvent system and reintroducing the plasma into the animal, whereby dissolved lipids are separated with and remain in the solvent system.Type: ApplicationFiled: November 25, 2002Publication date: July 17, 2003Inventor: Bill E Cham

Patent number: 4895558Abstract: A method and apparatus for autologous plasma delipidation of animals (including humans). The method comprises drawing blood from the animal, separating the plasma from the red blood cells, delipidating the plasma with a lipid solvent, remixing the delipidated with the red blood cells and re-introducing the delipidated blood into the animal. A preferred apparatus which utilizes the above method comprises a needle for drawing blood from the animal and the blood is then fed into a centrifugal separator where the blood is separated into the plasma and red blood cells. The plasma is then mixed with a biphase solvent and passed through a separator where the delipidated plasma (in an aqueous phase) is drawn off from the lipid components (in an organic phase). After removal of solvent, the delipidated plasma is remixed with the red blood cells and re-introduced to the animal by a re-infusion needle.Type: GrantFiled: January 20, 1988Date of Patent: January 23, 1990Assignee: University of QueenslandInventor: Bill E.
