  • Patent number: 4787528
Abstract: A filler neck is provided for receiving a filler cap including a closure member having an axially outer portion, a threaded axially middle portion, and an axially inner portion. The filler neck includes a generally cylindrical tube having an axially outer portion, a threaded axially middle portion for receiving the threaded axially middle portion of the closure member, and a reduced-diameter axially inner portion. The reduced-diameter axially inner portion is positioned for receiving the axially inner portion of the closure member in a closely spaced relation to prevent radial movement of the axially inner portion of the closure member.

  • Patent number: 4716920
Abstract: A fuel cap having a pressure-vacuum valve assembly for sealing a vehicle fuel tank is provided. The cap has a normally closed vent to vent the fuel tank, with a first valve member to open the vent when the pressure within the tank reaches a predetermined superatmospheric level. The cap also has a second valve member to open the vent when the pressure within the tank reaches a predetermined subatmospheric level. The cap includes a roll-over valve disposed above the first and second valve members to close the vent when the vehicle and cap are rolled over to a substantially inverted orientation to prevent fuel from spilling out of the cap.

  • Patent number: 4678097
Abstract: A cap for closing a fuel fill neck of a vehicle is provided. The cap includes an axially extending housing that is adapted to engage and seal the neck. The cap further includes a first flange that extends radially outwardly from the axially upper portion of the housing and includes a groove formed therein to form a frangible portion. An outer cover is attached to the first flange that is adapted to be broken away upon impact. The cap further includes a second flange spaced axially below the first flange and configured to engage a gasket to seal the fill neck. The second flange is adapted to remain intact to seal the neck after the outer cover and the first flange are fractured and displaced from the cap.

  • Patent number: 4351350
Abstract: A valving assembly for a liquid-containing tank comprises a housing which includes vent and valve passageways extending axially therethrough. A roll-over valve is supported in the vent passageway by a spring which is calibrated normally to open the vent passageway to normalize the pressure inside the tank. Movement of the roll-over valve is assisted by the spring to close the vent passageway and prevent movement of the liquid from the tank when the tank is tilted. An excessive pressure valve is disposed in the valve passageway and urged by a spring normally to close the valve passageway. The spring is calibrated to provide movement of the excessive pressure valve member to open the valve passageway when the vent passageway is closed and superatmospheric pressure within the tank exceeds a predetermined level.

  • Patent number: 4162021
Abstract: A pressure-vacuum cap for a chamber such as an automobile gas tank having a normally upwardly extending filler neck formed with a peripherally and radially extending, upwardly facing sealing surface concentric with the longitudinal axis of the neck, the cap comprising a cover, a concentric housing extending downwardly from the cover into the filler neck and a gasket or gaskets providing a seal between the housing and the sealing surface, the housing providing a valve body having a centrally disposed, concentric passageway extending axially therethrough and in communication with the chamber. A pressure-vacuum valve assembly is disposed in that passageway for normalizing the pressure in the chamber, venting the chamber to atmosphere when the pressure in the chamber exceeds a predetermined superatmospheric level and when the pressure in the chamber drops below a predetermined subatmospheric level. The cap also provides, in addition to the pressure-vacuum valve assembly, a roll-over valve assembly.

  • Patent number: 4136795
Abstract: A cap for a radiator filler neck of the type having a peripherally extending upper lip and, downwardly from the lip, a radially inwardly and peripherally extending, upwardly facing pressure valve seat concentric with the axes defined by the neck and the cap. The cap comprises an outer shell for engaging and closing the filler neck, a molded plastic retainer connected to the outer shell, and a molded plastic pressure valve member for engaging the valve seat. The retainer has a peripherally and radially outwardly extending flange and a downwardly extending shank, a sealing ring is carried by the flange for engaging and sealing against the upper lip, and the valve member is provided with an upwardly extending shank. The shanks have interlocking portions for connecting the valve member to the retainer and a spring is disposed about the shanks for yieldably urging the valve member against the valve seat as well as to maintain the interlocking portions in engagement.

  • Patent number: 4000828
Abstract: A cap for closing the filler neck of a vehicle fuel tank, the cap comprising a valve housing, a pressure-vacuum valve assembly disposed in the housing to vent the tank when the pressure in the filler neck drops below a predetermined subatmospheric level and when the pressure in the filler neck exceeds a first predetermined superatmospheric level, a roll-over valve for closing the pressure-vacuum valve assembly when the filler neck is tilted, and an excessive pressure valve for bypassing the pressure-vacuum valve when the pressure in the filler neck exceeds a second and greater predetermined superatmospheric level.
