  • Patent number: 7520063
Abstract: A device assembly (216) for positioning a device (222) in a precision apparatus (10) includes a first housing (224), a second housing (226), a movement ball joint (229), and a locking ball joint (249). The first housing (224) retains the device (222). The second housing (226) is coupled to an apparatus frame (12). The movement ball joint (229) facilitates movement of the first housing (224) relative to the second housing (226). The locking ball joint (249) facilitates locking of the first housing (224) to the second housing (226). The movement ball joint (229) can guide movement of the first housing (224) relative to the second housing (226). For example, the first housing (224) can include a first guide surface (230) and the second housing (226) can include a second guide surface (232). In this embodiment, the guide surfaces (230) (232) cooperate to form the movement ball joint (229). Additionally, each of the guide surfaces (230) (232) can form a portion of a sphere.

  • Patent number: 7118506
Abstract: A active steering apparatus includes a housing, an input shaft, an output shaft, and an electrical motor. The electric motor has a stator fixed to the housing and a rotor. A first gear set interconnects the input shaft and the output shaft and includes a sun gear fixed to an end of the input shaft, a ring gear fixed to the output shaft, and a plurality of planet gears positioned between and interconnecting the ring gear and the sun gear. A second gear set is mounted onto the rotor and interconnects the ring gear and the housing such that rotation of the rotor relative to the housing imparts movement of the ring gear relative to the housing.

  • Patent number: 7109608
Abstract: A bi-directional smooth transition switch with bumpless transfer is disclosed. It is composed of two feedback loops, each with feedback and forward-loop compensators. During loop operation, one feedback loop is active, while the other is inactive. The smooth transition switch operates in the following manner. The switch output is measured. Next, an error signal is formed as the difference between the forward-loop compensator output and the switch output, which is fed to the input of a high gain feedback compensator. The output of the feedback compensator is a feedback signal. When no switching occurs, the feedback signal remains zero in the active loop, and the output signal of the inactive loop will track the output signal of the active loop. When the switchover occurs, the inactive loop will replace the original active loop and provide smooth transition switch's output.

  • Patent number: 7032705
Abstract: The present invention provides a system for compensating understeer and oversteer in a vehicle having a steer by wire system. The system includes a driver interface system, a sensor system, a controller, and a road wheel steering actuation system. The driver interface system receives steering input from the driver. The sensor system senses the steering input and generates a steering control signal that is received by the controller. The controller determines if an understeer or oversteer condition exists and generates an appropriate steering assist signal that is then communicated to the road wheel steering actuation system. In response to the steering assist signal, the road wheel steering actuation system adjusts the road wheel angle to compensate for the understeer or oversteer condition.
