Patent number: 6937022Abstract: The present invention provides a method and apparatus for performing resistivity measurements for the purpose of geo-steering with 180-degree azimuth resolution. All the measurements represent a complementary set of data acquired in two operational modes. The directional mode providing sensitivity of the received signals to the azimuth characteristics of the formation. The deep mode provides a large depth of investigation for resistivity determination and bed boundary detection. The directional mode can be implemented using one receiving coil placed in between quadruple type transmitter. The deep mode represents either array induction measurements or multiple propagation resisitivity (MPR) measurements that provide high depth of investigation for resistivity determination and bed boundary detection.Type: GrantFiled: July 1, 2003Date of Patent: August 30, 2005Assignee: Baker Hughes IncorporatedInventors: Gregory Itskovich, Alexander Bespalov, Borislav J. Patent number: 6627873Abstract: A logging while drilling and wire line system for analyzing the concentration of carbon dioxide or another substance, in a sample down hole in a bore hole. A chamber is filled with a sample that may be fluid, or condensate and gas. The interior chamber volume is selectably expandable for decompression of the sample. The sample may alternately be decompressed by allowing a sample at formation pressure to enter the chamber at a lower pressure, thereby decompressing the sample. A sensor measures the absorbance, transmittance or attenuated total reflectance of the infrared light. Mid and near infrared light is utilized to identify carbon dioxide, water and a plurality of hydrocarbons. A wiper cleans the transmitter and sensor between readings to reduce measurement error caused by fluid sample contamination.Type: GrantFiled: April 16, 2001Date of Patent: September 30, 2003Assignee: Baker Hughes IncorporatedInventors: Borislav J. Tchakarov, Rocco DiFoggio, Stanislav W. Forgang, Otto N. Fanini, Marcelo F. Civarolo, James C. Hunziker

Patent number: 6218662Abstract: A logging tool system for analyzing the carbon dioxide concentration in a fluid sample downhole in a borehole. A chamber is filled with the fluid sample and is closed to isolate the fluid sample from the borehole. The interior chamber volume is expanded to decompress the fluid sample, and a transmitter discharges light in the mid-infrared range. A sensor measures the absorbance of mid-infrared light by the decompressed fluid sample and generates a signal representing the carbon dioxide concentration. Mid-infrared light absorbance in the range between 4.1 and 4.4 microns can be analyzed by the processor to identify the carbon dioxide concentration in the fluid sample, and infrared absorbance in the mid-infrared range between 3.2 and 3.6 microns can be analyzed to identify methyl and metheylene components. A wiper cleans the transmitter and sensor between readings to reduce measurement errors caused by fluid sample contamination.Type: GrantFiled: April 23, 1998Date of Patent: April 17, 2001Assignee: Western Atlas International, Inc.Inventors: Borislav J. Patent number: 6002643Abstract: A downhole tool containing instruments and a pulser is landed within a string of drill pipe. The pulser has a pulser body and an orifice on a lower end. A piston slides within a bore in the body and has a signal poppet on a lower end. In an extended position, the signal poppet extends into and obstructs the orifice to reduce the flow of drilling fluid. In an open position, the signal poppet does not obstruct the orifice to increase the flow of drilling fluid. A bidirectional solenoid valve is located above the piston and has upper and lower electromagnetic coils and an axially moveable rod. The rod is movable between a closed position in an opening in the body and an open position away from the opening. The rod is moved to both positions in response to the instruments which sends signals to the coils. The mud pulser also has an on/off flow switch which is actuated by the commencement of mud circulation. Initially, the rod is in the closed position.Type: GrantFiled: August 19, 1997Date of Patent: December 14, 1999Assignee: Computalog LimitedInventors: Borislav J. Tchakarov, Daniel C. Seutter

Patent number: 5934378Abstract: A measurement while drilling tool has upper and lower centralizers secured to an upper end. Each centralizer comprises three major components: a housing, a tapered nose, a shaft which is slides in a bore of the housing, and a set of fingers around the shaft. The nose of the lower centralizer is tapered at a greater angle than the nose of the upper centralizer. An upper end of each finger is pivotally attached to the shaft. The fingers slidingly engage the nose when they are not in a retracted position. The centralizers are suspended in a drill pipe so that the shafts are fully extended from their housings. With the shafts extended, the fingers retract. Prior to drilling, the tool is lowered until it lands in a sub which causes the lower shaft to slides downward into the housing. The lower fingers move outward to engage the drill pipe without wedging against it.Type: GrantFiled: August 7, 1997Date of Patent: August 10, 1999Assignee: Computalog LimitedInventor: Borislav J. Patent number: 5836388Abstract: A downhole measurement tool is lowered into a well through a drill pipe. The tool has at least two modules which are joined by a flexible linkage. The linkage has two subs, each of which has an electrical connector for the modules. Each sub has a hub that is threaded. A threaded retainer nut retains each connector. Each nut has a hub that is threaded and is smaller in diameter than the sub hub. A coiled inner spring threadingly engages each nut hub. A coiled outer spring surrounds and threadingly engages each sub hub. The outer spring surrounds the inner spring and is wound in an opposite direction of the inner spring. The springs are embedded within an elastomeric member. The inner spring is dimensioned such that, for a selected lateral bend prior to installation with the outer spring, the inner spring will twist a selected angle in a first twist direction.Type: GrantFiled: July 16, 1997Date of Patent: November 17, 1998Assignee: Computalog LimitedInventor: Borislav J. Tchakarov

Patent number: 5660238Abstract: An apparatus for selectively activating a downhole Measurement While Drilling (MWD) tool, so as to prolong the life of the MWD battery and improve function of the MWD flow restrictor pilot valve assembly, includes a switch actuator responsive to pressure differential disposed incorporated within a fluid sealed pressure chamber which also incorporates a pilot valve assembly for activating the flow restrictor for causing mud pulse signals. The switch actuator comprises upstream and downstream bellows sealing a fluid filled reservoir, with a push-action switch within the upstream bellows, isolated from the drilling fluid. Ports expose the upstream and downstream bellows to longitudinally spaced points in the flowstream, the upstream ports providing flow-through cleaning of the upstream bellows.Type: GrantFiled: January 16, 1996Date of Patent: August 26, 1997Assignee: The Bob Fournet CompanyInventors: Leon M. Patent number: 5348091Abstract: An oil-field tool for use in combination with a MWD tool, for deployment and retrieval of a MWD tool through a drill string, and, for rigid continuously self-adjusting, centralization of the MWD tool during drilling, includes: housing having a tapering nose; slidable shaft having a flared portion; extendable fingers pivotably attached to the slidable shaft; means for releasable attachment to a workstring; and, means for attachment to a MWD tool.Typically, the housing of the invention is attached to a MWD tool while at the surface and the combined apparatus is lowered through the drill string by wireline releasably attached to the slidable shaft. During lowering, the weight of the housing and MWD tool extends the slidable shaft, positioning the extendable fingers above the tapering nose of the housing, thereby retracting the fingers.Type: GrantFiled: August 16, 1993Date of Patent: September 20, 1994Assignee: The Bob Fournet CompanyInventors: Borislav J.
