  • Patent number: 9676924
Abstract: A method of making a benzyl cis-cyclohexane 1,2-dicarboxylate triester having the steps: a. forming a reaction mixture by reacting the following three components: i. a synthetic or biobased reagent selected from the group consisting of an alpha-hydroxyester and a beta-hydroxyester, ii. an anhydride selected from the group consisting of cis-hexahydrophthalic anhydride, 4-methylcyclohexane-1,2-dicarboxylic anhydride, and 3-methylcyclohexane-1,2-dicarboxylic anhydride, and iii. an alkylamine catalyst; and b. contacting benzyl chloride with the reaction mixture to yield a product that is free of phthalates and includes at least one benzyl cis-cyclohexane 1,2-dicarboxylate triester.

  • Publication number: 20100113664
Abstract: Compounds useful as plasticizers and the synthesis thereof are disclosed. In general, the invention includes mixed alkyl/aryl asymmetric cyclic diesters where the aryl and alkyl ester moieties are attached to a cyclic structure at vicinal carbons. The invention also includes synthetic processes of making such compounds. Blends of these asymmetric cyclic diesters with other plasticizers are demonstrated to be of use in plasticizing polymers.

  • Patent number: 6942829
Abstract: The present invention provides a method of forming a polymer-wood composite structure and additive systems for use therein. The method of the invention includes extruding a heated mixture that includes from about 20% to about 80% by weight of a thermoplastic polymer, from about 20% to about 80% by weight of a cellulosic filler material, and from about 0.1% to about 10% by weight of an additive system. The additive system according the invention includes a blend of from about 10% to about 90% by weight of a nonionic compatibilizer having an HLB value of from about 9 to about 19 and from about 10% to about 90% by weight of a lubricant. Use of the method and additive system according to the invention facilitates the production of highly filled polymer-wood composite structures at a very high output rate while maintaining commercially acceptable surface appearance.
