  • Patent number: 8683883
Abstract: A rotary actuator mechanism for applying torque to a shaft and comprising an actuator housing forming an actuator path that includes an actuator pinion rotatably supported in said housing and having said shaft secured thereto. The pinion having peripheral notches of a selected shape and positioned within the actuator path. The mechanism having a train of discrete actuator elements having opposite ends and positioned in the actuator path, each of the actuator elements being of said selected shape to enable reception in the peripheral notches, a plurality of the elements engaging the notches. The mechanism having at least one linear actuator supported by the housing and engaging one of the ends of the train of actuator elements, the linear actuator being selectively activated to push the train of discrete actuator elements through the actuator path to thereby serially engage the actuator elements with the notches of the pinion and thereby apply torque to the shaft.

  • Patent number: 7623945
Abstract: A robotic master controller having a series of linking members interconnected by pivots to each other and a hand grip with relative position sensors therein and sensing yaw and pitch of the hand grip due to movement of the user. The final linking member including an arched section that terminates in a pivot for the hand grip that is located within the user's hand during use and has an axis of rotation that generally aligns with a roll axis of rotation of the arm when the user's hand rotates between a palm up configuration to a palm down configuration. The final linking member also includes an arched section that extends over and cradles the outer palm of the hand when the hand is in the palm up configuration. The user reaches around the outside (to the right for a right arm controller) to grasp the hand grip.

  • Patent number: 5350033
Abstract: A remotely controllable robotic inspection vehicle includes a fixed housing which can accommodate a number of modular inspection and/or robotic arm components. The base unit includes two drive and two free castering wheels arranged in an independently articulating configuration which insures that at least three of the wheels are in a supporting position at all times and that the drive wheels always have traction. Thus, when small objects, such as construction debris, uneven floors, etc., are encountered, the vehicle easily traverses them with no danger of tipping or loss of traction. The two drive wheels are independently powered, which permits the vehicle to be rotated in a very small confined space about the same diameter as the width of the vehicle. A centrally mounted, modular telescoping camera assembly includes a camera which can be raised and lowered as well as rotated in the vertical and horizontal planes and/or a modular robotic arm.

  • Patent number: 5024116
Abstract: A rotary actuator includes a plurality of interchangeable and essentially identical modular drive units each having a pair of racks operably rotating a drive shaft such that the torque applied to the shaft is evenly divided between the drive units. The shaft has pinion-type teeth of a length to accommodate the number of drive units needed to develop the required shaft torque. End plates sandwich the drive units therebetween and rotatably support the shafts. An internal channel system routes hydraulic fluid simultaneously to the proper ends of the racks of each of the drive units to translate the racks in unison. A position sensor identifies the rotary position of the shaft and provides such information to the control mechanism. A rack biasing mechanism for each rack provides biasing pressure against an associated back of a rack directly opposite the shaft and includes a roller acting on the back of the rack. A differential pressure sensor arrangement is provided to sense rotary loading of the shaft.

  • Patent number: 5019761
Abstract: A force feedback control system for a backhoe includes a single grip articulated control arm having members and joints therebetween analogous to the members and joints of an articulated backhoe arm connecting an excavation bucket to a backhoe frame. A bilateral closed loop control circuit compares slave position signals from output joint position sensors associated with the backhoe arm joints with corresponding master position signals from input joint sensors associated with the control arm joints and provides command signals to actuators associated with the backhoe joints to move them so that differences in corresponding master and slave position signals are minimized. Backhoe joint load sensors provide load signals indicating resistance to movement of the associated backhoe joints, and the control circuit generates force feedback signals to drive feedback motors associated with the control arm joints to apply toruqes thereto to reflect the resistance to movement of the associated backhoe joints.

  • Patent number: 4648782
Abstract: A manipulator device particularly adapted for deep-sea, submersible use utilizes a human-like arm and a novel shoulder arrangement mounted on a base through a base pivot. The manipulator is hydraulically powered and a hydraulic manifold forms a body of the shoulder arrangement and is situated adjacent an azimuth control actuator, an elbow control actuator and an upper arm control actuator all mounted to the body and rotatable with the body about the base pivot. The arm includes an upper arm swingably connected to the shoulder via the upper arm control actuator and a forearm swingably connected to the upper arm at an elbow joint and controlled by the elbow control actuator. A wrist assembly and appropriate actuators are mounted to a distal end of the forearm and a gripper assembly and associated actuators are connected to a distal end of the wrist assembly.

  • Patent number: 4002331
Abstract: A flat material folding device is operative to fold flat material, such as napkins and the like, in a manner to have at least three folds extending transversely of the material and a center fold extending normal to the three folds. The folding device includes rollers positioned adjacent an entry for material to be folded to receive and move an intermediate portion of the flat material therebetween forming a first fold and moving the material along a folding path. A pair of laterally spaced arms and material grippers are on the path and receive respective side edge portions of the flat material spreading same and operable to move same along the path and form the second and third folds with respective portions of the material in face-to-face relation. A center folding device includes a pair of rollers engageable with a center portion of the material having the three transverse folds and operative to move the material therebetween to form the center fold extending normal to the three folds.
