Patent number: 9677939Abstract: According to an example, an apparatus for performing spectroscopy includes a substrate on which a plurality of surface-enhanced spectroscopy (SES) elements are positioned substantially along a first plane. The apparatus also includes a first electrode positioned adjacent to the plurality of SES elements substantially along the first plane and a second electrode positioned adjacent to the plurality of SES elements substantially along the first plane and on a side of the plurality of SES elements that is opposite the first electrode. The first electrode and the second electrode are to generate an electric field around the plurality of SES elements when voltages are applied through the first electrode and the second electrode.Type: GrantFiled: August 25, 2015Date of Patent: June 13, 2017Assignee: Hewlett-Packard Development Company, L.P.Inventors: Brian C. Samuels, Zhiyong Li

Patent number: 7349155Abstract: A reflector comprises a core and a first dielectric mirror formed over at least a portion of the core to reflect light having a preselected wavelength. The reflector may comprise a plurality of dielectric mirrors formed concentrically over the first dielectric mirror to reflect light having the preselected wavelength. The multiple dielectric mirrors may have different diffraction indices. A layer of such reflectors deposited onto the reflective surface of a projection screen may enhance the reflective selectivity of the screen to the preselected wavelength. Reflectors formed to reflect different wavelengths may be deposited onto the reflective surface to enhance selectivity to the different wavelengths and minimize reflection of ambient light.Type: GrantFiled: November 8, 2004Date of Patent: March 25, 2008Assignee: Hewlett-Packard Development Company, L.P.Inventors: Brian C. Patent number: 5835119Abstract: The present invention provides a face emission printing system including an array of face emission electroluminescent devices coupled to an optical structure. The face emission EL printhead is comprised of a substrate; and a plurality of layer stack supported on the substrate, each of the layer stack including a thin film active layer which generates light in response to conduction of electrical current, a first thin film electrode layer and a second thin film electrode layer, where at least one of said electrode layers being spaced apart from said active layer by a thin film dielectric layer. The first thin film electrode layer is transparent and light is emitted through the surface of the first thin film electrode layer. The layer stacks are preferably staggered and the optical structure is preferably a micro lens are optical concentrator formed integral to the emitting surface of the plurality of layer stacks.Type: GrantFiled: October 31, 1995Date of Patent: November 10, 1998Assignee: Hewlett- Packard CompanyInventor: Brian C. Patent number: 5290517Abstract: An optical agglutination assay device for detecting cocaine. The device includes a hollow reaction cell defining a generally planar liquid receiving reaction chamber having a thickness which is insufficient to diminish the intensity of a ray of light passing through an aqueous reaction system in the chamber in a first direction transversely of the plane of the latter. The device also includes a pusher assembly for delivering an aqueous agglutination reaction system and an unknown substance suspected of containing cocaine into the chamber. The agglutination system is such that agglutination is inhibited in the presence of cocaine. The device also includes an optical transmitting and receiving unit aligned with the reaction cell for measuring the intensity of light reflected from the chamber as a measure of the occurrence of agglutination in the reaction system.Type: GrantFiled: April 4, 1990Date of Patent: March 1, 1994Assignee: Westinghouse Electric Corp.Inventors: Brian C. Samuels, Jeffry A. Reidler, David B. Silcott
