  • Patent number: 5772793
Abstract: A thermophotovoltaic device includes at least one thermal radiator tube, a cooling tube concentrically disposed within each thermal radiator tube and an array of thermophotovoltaic cells disposed on the exterior surface of the cooling tube. A shell having a first end and a second end surrounds the thermal radiator tube. Inner and outer tubesheets, each having an aperture corresponding to each cooling tube, are located at each end of the shell. The thermal radiator tube extends within the shell between the inner tubesheets. The cooling tube extends within the shell through the corresponding apertures of the two inner tubesheets to the corresponding apertures of the two outer tubesheets. A plurality of the thermal radiator tubes can be arranged in a staggered or an in-line configuration within the shell.

  • Patent number: 5349605
Abstract: A DC power supply for producing plasma for a DC arc torch. The DC power supply includes a controlled switch for coupling and decoupling a direct current source from the DC arc torch. The DC power supply also includes an inductance for supplying current to the DC arc torch when the direct current source is decoupled from the DC arc torch. A freewheeling diode is used to provide a current path from the inductance to the DC arc torch. A switch driver drives the coupling and decoupling of the controlled switch at a particular frequency and at a variable duty cycle. A feedback circuit varies a variable duty cycle of the switch driver in response to the amount of current detected flowing to the DC arc torch.

  • Patent number: 4888234
Abstract: A composite structural material and a method of making it, which material is thermoformable and capable of being rigidified by application of a resin, and which is useful in certain electronics applications because of a metallic layer incorporated within the structure. A layer of a selected metal is needle punched onto a fibrous batt of selected synthetic thermoplastic fibers, which is then thermoformed to a desired shape and rigidified by contacting with, and being embedded in, a suitable resin. Specific applications of the use of this composite include a parabolic dish-shaped antenna, an electromagnetic interference shield for electronic equipment, and a radioactive emission shield.

  • Patent number: 4862814
Abstract: A burner which is suitable for use in combusting pulverized coal and which can be used as an igniter for igniting the main burners in steam raising plant. The burner has an electrically powered torch which generates a continuous plasma which extends into a devolatilization zone of the burner, and primary conduits are provided for directing a primary supply of dense phase pulverized coal into the devolatilization zone. The burner is constructed also to include a combustion zone which surrounds the devolatilization zone. The burner is constructed also to include a comubstion zone which surrounds the devolatilization zone, and secondary conduits are provided for directing a secondary supply of pulverized coal into the combustion zone along with a supply of combustion supporting air.
